Syndicated talk-radio personality Don Imus apologized Friday for calling members of the Rutgers University women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos" during a segment yesterday in his "Imus in the Morning" show.
Imus and his producer and on-air sidekick, Bernard McGuirk, went on to further attack the black members of the team, calling them "jigaboos and wannabees."
In his apology, Imus called his comments "insensitive and ill-conceived."
"It was completely inappropriate, and we can understand why people were offended," he told listeners at the opening of his broadcast Friday morning.
He further called the comments "thoughtless and stupid" and said, "We're sorry."
The apology came after Imus initially brushed aside criticism, telling The New York Times "not to worry about some idiot saying something meant to be amusing."
Rutgers officials issued this statement: "We agree with Mr. Imus that this was, in his own words, an 'idiot comment.' We are very proud of the success of the Rutgers women's basketball team. Coach Stringer and the Rutgers players are outstanding ambassadors for this great institution."
Shortly after Imus made his comments about the Rutgers team, MSNBC released the following statement: "While simulcast by MSNBC, 'Imus in the Morning' is not a production of the cable network and is produced by WFAN Radio. As Imus makes clear every day, his views are not those of MSNBC. We regret that his remarks were aired on MSNBC and apologize for these offensive comments."
The comments drew immediate outrage from the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), which had called for a boycott of Imus' show until he issued a "sincere and unequivocal apology," referring to him as a "sophomoric host."
"Has he lost his mind?" asked NABJ President Bryan Monroe, vice president and editorial director for Ebony and Jet magazines in Chicago.

The “Jigaboos vs. Wannabes” comment was a reference to a Spike Lee movie where two separate groups of black girls adopt these names — a reference to the fact that one of them (guess which one) is comprised of lighter-skinned girls than the other.
This is why I don’t watch or even concern myself with this idiot!

I like Imus. I watch for the musical guests mainly. However he thinks because he runs a ranch for kids with cancer that he is immune to any and all criticism. The Wall Street Journal and Congressman Joe Barton found that out the hard way. He calls lots of women “Ho’s”. He calls his wife Diedre the “green” ho because of her crusade against toxic cleaning products. He will get a pass on this one by the MSM except Fox News because he calls Bush and Cheney war criminals daily. Other than that, it’s usually the best programming of any of the cable news outlets in that time slot. JMHO. YMMV.

Thanks for the explanation. Somehow, most news outlets failed to explain the comment, and it did seem absurdly mean without hearing about the movie reference.
I would watch woman playing basketball sooner than I would watch Imus on his TV program make an ass of himself.

Did you ever watch the TV show "Futurama?" One time the cast crash landed on a planet populated by 12 foot tall women lead by a "femputer." The giant women explained that their most popular sport was basketball and, "our players can't dunk, but they know it more important to have good fundamentals." The male characters feel down laughing. Later they are led before the femputer, and after listing all the other terrible offenses the men have committed, one of the giants says, "And they even make fun of women's basketball!" The femputer says, "Did you explain the part about how the female players have great fundamentals?!?"
For making fun of the sport, the men are sentenced to death by "snoo-snoo."

You're new here, so allow me to explain. It's part of FR etiquette that if you talk about another person's faults or mistakes to anyone, including the mods, you include the person you're talking about. Otherwise you're "talking behind their back.
Your comment contained racist language, and we don't need that bilge on this site. If you disagree with that characterization, just consider it my opinion--you know, you have yours, I have mine. Or, if you really want to test it out, go to the nearest club frequented by the hip-hop crowd, pick a group of women and call them (in a loud voice) "nappy-headed hos." Then, as nature takes it course, be glad that my wife and I both donated type O blood last week.
They still run it on Cartoon Network at 10:30 and 11:00 Eastern on weeknights. I’ve now seen every episode and I’ll tell you this: Futurama kicks the Simpson’s butts up and down the block, and it was great right up to the end,,,the last episode was the best of them all.

My sister named our black dog Jigaboo (over 50 years ago). I hate to tell people his name when I give them pictures that he’s in. Good old dog. Deserved a better name than that.
I was shocked to read these comments. If Rush Limbaugh had this, even in jest, the libs would be making it into a full-blown hate crime.
If there is any fairness, Imus deserves to be fired. These weren’t just racial “jokes” that irritate only the predictable thin-skin crowd. These comments were outright racist and shameful.
