Del Monte Pet Products Voluntarily Withdraws Specific Product Codes of Pet Treats and Wet Dog Food Products in the United States

April 6, 2007—As a precautionary measure, Del Monte Pet Products is voluntarily recalling select product codes of its pet treat products sold under the Jerky Treats®, Gravy Train® Beef Sticks and Pounce Meaty Morsels® brands as well as select dog snack and wet dog food products sold under private label brands. A complete list of affected brands and products is below.

The Company took this voluntary recall action immediately after learning from the FDA that wheat gluten supplied to Del Monte Pet Products from a specific manufacturing facility in China contained melamine. Melamine is a substance not approved for use in food. The FDA made this finding as part of its ongoing investigation into the recent pet food recall.

The adulteration occurred in a limited production quantity on select product codes of the brands below. This recall removes all Del Monte pet products with wheat gluten procured from this manufacturing facility from retail shelves. In addition, since the beginning of the recall in mid-March, Del Monte has discontinued sourcing product from this plant.

No other Del Monte Pet Products treats, biscuits or wet dog food products are impacted by this recall, and no Del Monte dry cat food, dry dog food, wet cat food or pouched pet foods are subject to this voluntary recall.

Del Monte Pet Products has proactively engaged and fully cooperated with the FDA since the start of its investigation. The adulterated ingredients were used in limited production over the last three months for those items identified by specific product codes. Del Monte Pet Products has not used wheat gluten from this manufacturing facility in China in any other pet products except those described below.

Consumers should discontinue feeding the products with the Product Codes detailed below to their pets.

Del Monte Pet Products are 100% guaranteed and all voluntarily recalled products will be refunded.

Del Monte Pet Products customers can contact our Consumer Hotline at (800) 949-3799 for further information about the recall and for instructions on obtaining a product refund. Voluntarily Withdraws Jerky Treats Dog Snacks Beef Flavour with the Best Before Date of 16.08.08 TORONTO, April 2, 2007 - As a precautionary measure, DLM Foods Canada Corp. is voluntarily withdrawing Jerky Treats® Dog Treats Beef Flavour with the best before date of 16.08.08. Consumers should discontinue feeding this product and return affected products to their store for a refund. No other DLM Foods Canada Corp. products are subject to this voluntary withdrawal.

The Company took this voluntary withdrawal action after learning from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) that wheat gluten supplied to DLM Foods Canada Corp. from a specific manufacturing facility in China contained melamine. Melamine is a substance not approved for use in food in the United States. The FDA made this finding as part of its ongoing investigation into the recent pet food recall in the United States. DLM Foods Canada Corp. conferred with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency today to coordinate the details of this voluntary withdrawal as it applied to the Canadian market.

The adulteration occurred in a limited production quantity indicated by the one best before date of Jerky Treats Dog Treats Beef Flavour product line mentioned above. This withdrawal removes all DLM Foods Canada Corp. pet products with wheat gluten procured from this manufacturing facility from retail shelves.

So far, my kids are still clear of the endangered species list. All the more reason why we've been feeding them 100% domestically-produced organic dry foods, and an extra helping of whatever Daddy is fixing for dinner. :-)

Does anyone else have dogs that go bug-f**k loony for canned tuna fish? I had some for breakfast (diet, and all that), and after I went to work, they knocked over the garbage can again to get to the empty tin because they didn't pilfer enough from me. It's like some sort of narcotic to them. I mean, they lose control in a way that's out of character for them when a can of albacore is opened. They can smell it outside - in the corner of the yard - through the dog door - when I'm in the kitchen 200 feet away. I've actually witnessed them lick a can into all four corners of a room, down the hall, and into another room before they give up. LOL They're like addicts.

Depends upon your diet. If your meal is porkchops, green beans, salad and perhaps a canned fruit I don’t know that gluten would be in any of that.

Any breads or pastas would be more suspect, and of course, we all eat bread every day.

But a dog eats the exact same kibbles every day.

But the investigation took a new turn today, when the FDA told CNN it is looking whether there could have been a profit motive for deliberately introducing melamine into the wheat gluten. In other words, it might not have been an accident and may have been about money. (on camera): That's right. Until now, the assumption has been that this was an accidental contamination, because melamine is used in plastics and pesticides, and has no business in pet food. However, the chemical could potentially be used to raise protein levels in the gluten, which could increase the price or make it easier to sell. 1. The wheat gluten imported from China was not for human consumption, because, I believe, it had been genetically engineered. The FDA has a wholly cavalier attitude toward feeding animals such ‘frankenfoods’ but places some restrictions when human consumption is involved (yet refuses appropriate food labeling).

2. The ‘rat poison’ aminopterin is used in molecular biology as an anti-metabolite, folate antagonist, and in genetic engineering biotechnology as a genetic marker. This could account for its presence in this imported wheat gluten.

3. The ‘plastic’, ‘wood preservative’, contaminant melamine, the parent chemical for a potent insecticide cyromazine, could well have been manufactured WITHIN the wheat plants themselves as a genetically engineered pesticide. This is much like the Bt. insecticidal poison present in most US commodity crops that go into animal feed.

4.So called ‘overexpression’ can occur when spliced genes that synthesize such chemicals become hyperactive inside the plant and result in potentially toxic plant tissues, lethal not just to meal worms and other crop pests, but to cats, dogs, birds, butterflies and other wildlife; and to their creators. I know what you mean. The problem is gluten is in more products then most people know. Cereals, grain products, pastries, processed foods, etc. Even many vitamin capsules are made of gluten.

It is also listed under various names like 'Grain Byproducts' or 'Wheat Byproducts'.

Just like MSG, just like sugar, just like trans-fats, they attempt to hide them under various names. Those of us lucky enough not to eat processed foods, sugars, etc., are still in the minority in this country.

Even if the contaminated gluten has not made it into the human food chain, this episode has shown us just how easily one mistake (or one terrorist act) can affect thousands, perhaps millions.

I was never in a hurry to make the connection to genetically modified food but Dr. Fox makes the first compelling case which explains why -both- melanite and aminopterin were found in the Chinese wheat gluten.

FWIW - I have lost 20 pounds on Atkins. I’ve managed to stay on it and have kept most of the weight off for two years now.

Atkins however is very unforgiving of “cheating”. Stay away from refined sugar, wheat, corn and starch and you’ll be OK. I’ll treat my self to a baked potato on the weekend and maybe a sandwich with some good German rye or pumpernickel. Get high fiber bread because the fiber reduces your carbohydrate count. Domestic puffy air loaf white bread is garbage.

Use SPLENDA as your sugar substitute. Less issues than other artificial sweeteners.

Tired of scrambled eggs? Here’s a wild Saturday breakfast I came up with,

Smash up a bag of Barbecue Pork Rinds and coat a pound of chicken livers. Fry ‘em up in some butter and oil.

I am getting real tired of giving our Tabby the Ringer’s IV after two weeks. He does seem to be doing better but I need to get another blood/urine test to be sure.

Maybe some good will eventually come out of the recall. It is almost amusing (in a really sick and sad way) watching this whole train wreck play out.

I hope it doesn’t get to the supermarkets, really. Just in case I am reading labels and buying no pet or human food with wheat gluten in it.

Isn’t it amazing how much sugar is in condiments? Start adding it all up and you’re hitting 100 - 200 carbs a day just from “hidden” sugars.

My “Holy Trinity” is Liquid Smoke, Louisiana Hot Sauce and Worcestershire Sauce. Add some bacon grease and onions and you can make a meal out of darn near anything that walks, crawls or flies!

I have a 3 + pound bin of the Jerky Treats by Del Monte left from a 2-pack I got at Costco a couple of months ago. It is not on the recall list and it has a big “No Wheat Formula” label on it. Is it just food that contains wheat gluten that is the problem? I am sorry I have not been able to keep up with all the updates. Maybe I should just throw it away.
