The Pirates of Tehran By Fred Thompson Posted in Foreign Affairs
Oil prices fell. The stock market rose. Video images of smiling British soldiers with Iranian President Ahmadinejad were everywhere. So were pictures of the 15 freed hostages embracing family members back home. The relief over the return of the Brits was so tremendous; you could almost hear birds singing.
Maybe it's because military action won't be needed or maybe it's just because the ordeal won't drag on and on, but the world is breathing easier now. A lot of folks are happy. The problem, as I see it, is that Ahmadinejad seems to be the happiest.
And why shouldn't he be? He has shown the world that his forces can kidnap British citizens, subject them to brutal psychological tactics to coerce phony confessions, finagle the release of a high-ranking Iranian terror coordinator in Iraq, utterly trash the Geneva conventions and suffer absolutely no consequences.
The UN Security Council summoned its vaunted multilateral greatness to issue a swift statement of sincere uneasiness. The EU, which has pressured Britain to rely on Europeans for mutual defense instead of the US, wouldn't even discuss economic sanctions that might disrupt their holidays. Even NATO was AWOL.
Please do keep reading . . .
Tony Blair doesn't appear to be in much of a mood for celebrating. I don't know how he could be, given the troubling spectacle of British soldiers shake the hand of their kidnapper as a condition of release. In the old days, they would have kissed his ring -- but wearing Iranian suits and carrying swag more appropriate to a Hollywood awards ceremony may have been as embarrassing. Ironically, Blair's options are fewer by the day as his own party moves to mothball the British fleet,

It's nice to know that he "gets it".
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
“Right now, the pirate Ahmadinejad is clearly more confident about the outcome of the Global War on Terror than we are. That ought to give us pause”
Don’t froget the assist from Nancy Pelosi.
I hope that he is POTUS #44.
God, to have a brilliant president. What an asset Thompson would be as president.
Compare this thoughtful article to Julie-Yawnee, his twisted logic in support of abortion (”yes, since abortion is a constitutional right, to deny a woman without funds an abortion merely because she can’t pay the butcher’s fee, is, well, weally wathcally”) gun grabbing and the like.
Thompson seems to be maybe realizing, “If not me, then who? If not now, then when?”
Right you are, Senator Thompson. Time to prosecute foreign policy for real.
Run Fred Run! I love my country more than I love my candidate. If you are the winning ticket, then so be it! If you are not, then you will only make the GOP nominee even stronger and will create excitement in this race!
....and Iran got England to suspend operations in the Gulf.
Win win win for them.
Iran’s confidence about winning the War should not give us pause....it should give us guts.
And guts we are going to need as our “allies” drop away one by one.
Is there an email or other means to tell Mr. Thompson that we want him to run? Thanks.
If liberals had it their way, theyd demand we do NOTHING after Irans thugs explode the first nuclear bomb on American soil. Thats what were up against folks. .... not only that, but, they would say that we provoked our enemies and deserved it.
Fred Thompson just did the modern version of the “Fire Side Chat”. I look forward to many more.
I’m not familiar with redstate.com.
Was this really written by Fred Thompson or did someone sign up using that as a screen name ?
If its really by Fred he’s got my vote whether he declares or not.
redstate is a good site, and there are plenty of Freepers there. I don’t think it would stay up long if it weren’t Thompson himself. The essay certainly sounds like his writing style, and reflects what he has been saying of late.
I'm sure they would demand we do something. You know, like maybe send the Iranians money because we treated them so badly that they attacked us.
