Yep, I'm sure the Prime Minister of Israel, incompetent as he is, would tell a room full of flunkies including a Muslim activist from the U.S. to negotiate with Assad for him. I'm sure Israel has no other decent means of getting its message through than by using travelling bands of diplo-tourists and their media carnival.
And I really love the part where Ellison says "Olmert told us not to tell Syria that Israel wasn't willing to attack them". Classic made-up storytelling. A five year old child would be proud of that one.

If I read this correctly, Ellison claimed that "[Olmert] told us to tell [Assad] that he was not planning to attack [Syria]." Either Ellison was making this up out of whole cloth or Olmert was making a bad tactical error. I would agree that the probablity of the first scenario is much greater than the second.

Ellison and Olmert are both rookies and both unwilling to face the evil which is islamofascism. Its tough to call on who was more wrong.

Though his record as Israeli PM isn’t very good and he’s now unpopular in his own country, I wouldn’t call Olmert a “rookie.” He’s been around Israeli politics for quite some time, but he migrated from right toward left, regrettably, after he saw his mentor Sharon do the same. Plus he’s involved in scandal allegations that stem from before he was PM.

Olmert used to be the Mayor of Jerusalum and was widely regardless as the most non-ideological and popular with liberal Jews and Arabs. His political experience didn't cover things like running wars, military planning or negotiating with other nations. On a personal level, he was one of the most arab friendly politicians in Israel. But he gets no credit for that now.
Olmert is in the Gerald Ford seat. Nobody asked for him to be there and the guy he replaced had the credentials to turn peacemaker without being thought to be soft. Olmert was never thought to be anything BUT soft.

Olmert is in the Gerald Ford seat. Not exactly. Unlike Ford, he sought his position and was elected to it.
As for his background, I believe he was considered to be on the Israeli "right" through most of his career, and for many years identitified with Likud. He grew up in a small farming community in Israel that was either founded or influenced by Jabotinsky.
However, his wife and some of his children are considered to be influences dragging him toward "accomodation" with the Arab enemy.
