Queer IQ: The Gay Couple's Advantage (same sex partners are more honest, affectionate)
Psychology Today ^ | 04/09/07 | Kaja Perina

Posted on 04/09/2007 7:44:05 AM PDT by presidio9

"There will always be a battle between the sexes because men and women want different things," quipped comedian George Burns. "Men want women and women want men." But when men want men and women want women, each couple can circumvent treacherous romantic terrain because partners more closely share sexual appetites and mind-reading abilities than do heterosexual pairs.

Most lesbians don't fear rapacious women and gay men need not always soft-peddle their sexual predilections. On balance, gays and lesbians understand their partners' bodies and biases with a certainty that many a clueless "breeder" yearns for. "Homosexuality could be viewed in some respects as the triumph of the individual's mating intelligence over the gonads' evolutionary interests," argues Geoffrey Miller.

The result is that gay relationships are less mired in deception and perhaps even less prone to friction, according to multiple studies.

"If two guys in a relationship are on the same wavelength, it's going to be very hard for them to deceive one another about their motives, their lusts, their philandering. Whereas between the sexes, each sex presents a socially acceptable form of masculinity or femininity that is reassuring to the other person but not particularly accurate," says Miller.

Romantic lies are, after all, a sort of Rosetta stone on which gender differences are coyly inscribed. Straight men lie about their commitment to the relationship and about their resources, finds psychologist Maureen O'Sullivan. They are also more likely to lie to keep their partner from getting angry at them, a small but telling testament to the wrath of women. Women, in contrast, lie to flatter a man's sense of self and to downplay their interest in other men.

Gay and lesbian couples are not only more honest with one another, they are also more likely to exhibit affection and humor in negotiating relationship stressors, according to John Gottman, emeritus professor of psychology at the University of Washington. Gottman compared conflict discussions in gay and straight couples and found that "gays and lesbians talked explicitly about sex and monogamy. Those topics don't come up in 31 years of studying heterosexual couples, who are uptight in discussing sex. In their conversations, you really don't know what they're talking about."

Whether a same-sex edge to mating intelligence makes for longer unions is unclear. Among the couples Gottman studied, the projected break-up rate for homosexuals, over a four-decade span, is a grim 64 percent (gay men are far more likely to split than are lesbians). The 40-year divorce rate for straight couples in first marriages is 67 percent. To amend George Burns: If you wait long enough, every couple wants different things.

They are also more prone to suicide, gay bowel syndrome, drug abuse, ‘spousal’ abuse, and herpes on their tonsils. Sorry to be graphic this morning but that’s the way it is. I’m sure there will be follow-up articles detailing these other, ‘more prones’ that are available to our Sodomite neighbors.

It's conclusions like this that give psychologists the twitology reputation they enjoy today.  Does anyone know a psychologist who didn't initially go into the field in an attempt to determine the roots of their own mental illness?

My first thought was that it would be impossible to get a valid sample. Gay men in this country have a 42 year life expectancy. Presumably, the researchers had to throw out every couple where one or both partners died of AIDS, suicide, and substance abuse.

Wright is accused of kidnapping and murdering a heterosexual deaf woman, Darlene VanderGiesen, 42, whom she thought was spending too much time with her girlfriend.

See, the article was right. She killed one of them "clueless breeders", not her partner, so gay relationships must be better (she didn't kill her partner, did she???

As an example:

Adam: "Say, Steve, I'm interested in some nasty sex, and you know darn well that I think monogamy is a crock, so I'm going down to the bus station to hook up with about a dozen strangers. I'll see you later."

Yes, in 31 years of studying heterosexual couples, this sort of conversation has not been observed. Therefore, homosexuals are morally superior. QED.

Psychology Today was a PC pile of dreck 20 years ago and it hasn’t changed. It puts on a nice colorful smiley cover now and is sold on newssstands everywhere but the a priori conclusions are just as prevalent, despite (all together now) science’s aim to be dispassionate.

Denmark has the longest history of gay marriage. Data indicates that average married couples live to 78 years, while gay couples (gay men and women) live to their 50’s. Factoring out AIDS, death is mainly from suicides. Even when society tolerates their existance, and they are with another lover, gay people are not fullfilled emotionally and many in the end kill themselves or adopt high risk behavior that leads to health problems (alcohol, drugs, overeating and etc, excluding AIDS) and early death. This data fits the arguement that homosexuality is an emotional problem and not a natural alternative, otherwise why all this high risk behavior associated with psychological disorders?

“That settles it, we should all be gay. Thanks.”

Why don’t all the men and Rosie O’Donnell-type women in the world decide to be gay right now?

Under such circumstances, I shall be compelled, as a matter of duty, to forsake monogamy in the interest of the preservation of the race. It will be a rough job, but don’t worry about poor me, I will manage somehow, alas.

It has lengthened now.

I doubt it. Since we know for an indisputable fact that people are born gay, but we can't know for certian who is or is not gay until some time around puberty, any life expectacy study of fairies omits those that die before sharing their gayness with the world (ie during childhood). Therefore, all gay life expectancy studies are skewed towards the high end. If more faggots are wearing raincoats before playing in the mud these days, then perhaps the 42yr figure has finnaly become a realistic measure.

Talk to an life insurance actuarians. They take life expedency data by age, sex, lifestyle and etc, determine the risks and required premiums for the risks for insurance companies. They will tell you that gays (even excluding AIDS) in general have a shorter life span (suicide, alcohol, overeating, high risk behavior) and tend to die in their 50’s. Denmark has the longest history of gay marriage and a detailed comparison of life expectancy of known gay couples versus heterosexual couples. Average life of gay couples is late 50’s, average life of normal couples is about 78 years old. They already factored out AIDS. Data close to what the insurance company actuaries have compiled. What they do in the privacy of their homes is their business, but when they try to introduce this short life span lifestyle to my children as an healthy alternative, I have a problem. If children cannot be exposed to cigarettes in school due to health reasons, sodomy should also be excluded and discouraged for the same reasons.

It is a mental illness, absolutely NO study has ever countered the DSM’s classification of Homosexuality, particularly male homosexuality as a mental illness. It was removed from the DSM because of politics, not because of science.

Psychology Today was a PC pile of dreck 20 years ago and it hasn’t changed.

The big error that the author and the psychologists both make is in assuming that sex is the main reason why all couples get together and stay together. While, I would agree that this certainly holds true for gay couples, it is far less so for heterosexual ones. Successful normal (heterosexual) couples stay together because sex is only a part of many factors of a fruitful relationship.

I worked at a now defunct large MA based computer company on a shift where there was a large number of Lesbian Techs and Assemblers. They’d come in on Monday morning looking like they had run into the 1974 Philadelpia Flyers and it was always over a paranoia of someone taking their girlfriends. And Oh Boy, if one of them got caught talking too close to a guy.
