My mother died of lymphoma, but this was 30 years ago. I understand it is very treatable if caught early.
Prayers up for the Thompsons.

Correct. And if reports are true that his wife is encouraging him to run, then I'm betting his health is not an issue.
That said, prayers sent for Fred! Still hoping he throws his hat into the ring.

Im wondering why he wanted to get it out there until hes going to be announcing his candidacy soon. To beat another candidates camp to the punch. Better if it comes from him than some obscure "leaker".

Its in remission. Seems hes getting this announcement out of the way as part of his decision on whether he will run for President. Seems like this announcement is part of "the plan" ..get any controversial news out now, since he has apparently gotten treatment for the last three years, and is apparently "in remission."
God bless you, Fred.

I think Fred is being proactive with this. Better to reveal this now than have the media (or a potential competitor) reveal it for him.

That is good news. All I heard was the breaking news on the radio. So if he’s known about it for 3 years, and still expressed his interest in running with that knowledge, then nothing has changed in that respect.
As much as I want to see him run for President, I do not want him to do it at the expense of his health.

So do I. The anti-Fredders would have loved to drop this “bombshell”. He may just be heading them off at the pass. Like you said, he had known for some time when he expressed interest. Wish him well whatever he does.

It depends on the type I guess. Jackie Onassis died very quickly from lymphoma, but others do well. One can assume from the fact that Fred was diagnosed three years ago, if that’s true, that he’s doing fine, and living with it.
To: Sue Perkick
This announcement merely takes some of the thunder away. The anti-Freds will still tout this as a major reason to vote for someone else.

I went there and found that Hodgkins lymphoma was one of the first cancers to be rendered curable by combination chemotherapy.
This explains, probably, why he has not announced.

To: Sue Perkick
Before the anti-fredders (and Rudy supporters) start questioning Fred's health, I hope they flash back to Rudy's cancer a few years ago as well as McCain's.
What I find amazing is that Fred is a very high profile person, whether in DC or Hollywood. The fact this was never leaked before now is astounding.

I think we are past the time when a diagnose of a manageable disease would automatically put the kibosh on a political career, or any career. The rules for republicans are not the same as rules for democrats. A republican better be healthy. Also, Elizabeth Edwards is terminal.

“I have had no illness from it, or even any symptoms. My life expectancy should not be affected. I am in remission, and it is very treatable with drugs if treatment is needed in the futureand with no debilitating side effects,” Thompson said.

“I think Fred is being proactive with this. Better to reveal this now than have the media (or a potential competitor) reveal it for him.”
Right, it’s called “getting ahead” of the story and it’s always better to release information such as this in your own controlled way. Could be a bit of “house cleaning” before his announcement.
To: tsmith130
I hope he responds well to treatment. We need to keep his voice around for a long time. However this very likely takes his name off the table for the Presidential primary season. He's likely to have too many days, thanks to both the disease and its treatment, when he just won't have the energy to do all the things such a candidate needs to do to be effective. Plus the uncertainty it gives the electorate would hurt his chances. However, presuming he responds well, it could still leave him in the running for VP as there he wouldn't have to work hard until the convention.
Between this announcement and Newt jumping the shark yesterday by endorsing both global warming and Kerry's book the GOP electorate needs to face the fact that we're stuck with just the candidates we already have. Fred can't run and nobody would want Newt. I don't think there's anyone else significant out there poised to join the race. For better or Hillary put an end to your wishful thinking and work at narrowing the current list down to one in a way that produces both a good candidate and one sufficiently intact to beat the Rats. Otherwise in another four years we'll be needing a Pied Piper to clear out DC.
To: Sig Sauer P220
This could just as easily be from McCain’s folks, especially since there was a recent reference to another growth in McCain’s forehead (I think).

I don't know but I don't see why this is any worse than Rudy's bout with prostate cancer.
Per my research: Hodgkins lymphoma was one of the first cancers to be rendered curable by combination chemotherapy.
So, I don't see this as an automatic death sentence.

No way. Fred is behind this. He’s beating everyone else to the punch. If this is indeed three years old, the fact that it has remained private says a lot. It is Fred’s choice to reveal this and no one else’s.

Arlen Specter had a much worse form and he seems to have fought it off. US Senator is not the same as Potus. Looks like Tim Johnson may make some level of recovery and he is still in the senate. I don't think Johnson will be running for Potus anytime soon.

Fred was treated successfully for this three years ago.
Let's not spin the politics of this, since we have no idea what the impact is on Fred's decision to enter the race. Let's hope he stays healthy, whether or not he enters the race.

clearly he knew he had this and has been seriously considering the presidential run despite it, it would appear he doesn’t consider it an impediment and is indeed doing the proactive thing by getting it out there. if this was a new diagnosis, it would be much more significant.

Then he probably is in remission. My mother is in remission with Lymphoma and has done really well since her chemo treatments 4 years ago. However, the chemo caused permanent bone marrow damage. For this she is is treated regularly for anemia with injections to stimulate the bone marrow. Those injections have worked really well for her.

McCain just bumped his head. Drudge made nothing into something.
To: Tatze
I don't think he would have even hinted or talked to anyone about running for president if he knew his health would be a issue or problem.
If he was just a Senator now, and not running for president, he had the choice to either keep it private or announce in public he had lymphoma, but as some have said on here, this maybe a preemptive plan to head off any gossip and let the public know about his health condition in a pre planed move to run for president.

Exactly.
Rudy = cancer survivor
McCain = cancer survivor
If anything, three high profile cancer survivors, along with Liz Edwards, will bring cancer treatment, etc. into the national spotlight after being sidelined by things like AIDS, Bird Flu, etc.
