What I find amusing, is that a candidate for POTOUS usually has all his Physical records disclosed..all except for Bill Clinton, LOL.

BJ fired the WH doctor who wanted to see those records prior to giving him an "allergy shot". (Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.)

BINGO, Dog!

Neil was just on now- showing part of his interview with Fred...he followed up by saying Fred brought this up to get it out in the public- see how the public reacts to it...and then....if we don’t freak out...he “just might run”

WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO FRED!!!!

God BLESS this man and his family..

Thompson: “I have a normal life expectancy and feel fine.”

So, should he just sit at home and wait to die? We’re ALL dying day by day and like Thompson said, NO ONE CAN TELL THE FUTURE!

God bless Fred. I will add him to my prayer list behind Tony Snow, Elizabeth Edwards and Tammy Faye Messner.

I hope he gets the treatment he needs and will do what is best for him and his family and not let overzealous people try to force him to do anything that might be detramental to his health. Now is the time for rest and recuperation.

I hope everything works out well for him. There are many different types of lymphomas which different treatment procedures and with different prognoses.

I’ve got to say, there does seem to be a disturbing trend emerging on FR.

A level of decency and respect MUST prevail toward ALL our potential candidates. Political passions are fine but it's really been inappropriately ugly here on some threads IMO. I hope it stops.

“Attempt to make a political point about Fred’s illness from a Mitt supporter.”

If you read my old posts, you would see that I’m supporting Fred since I don’t think Mitt can win.

And please dispense with the “let’s not talk about politics” issue- this disease doesn’t look serious enough to be considered a real personal tragedy, but it does look serious enough to be a political hindrance. Fred brought the news into the political arena this morning- he made it public.

Specter, if I remember correctly, had *Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma* which is way worse. If he can make it, so can Fred.

Non-Hodgkins is nasty. It's very aggressive. My 17-year old sister had it -- a tumor on her chest wall the size of a grapefruit -- and after prayers around the country it disappeared after ONE round of chemo. She finished her protocol and 15 years later she's married with a little girl.

My mom's non-Hodgkins was worse. It was stage four, spread from her kidney to the lymph system in her neck. It took a bone marrow transplant but she's alive ten years later and has been cancer free.

The chemo and radiation were the worst parts of their disease, not to mention the steroids, blood tests, ports, etc. I'm just so grateful they're alive today.

“So, should he just sit at home and wait to die?”

Where did I say that? I think he should run and whether I vote for him will depend on how likely he seems to beat Hillary. But make no mistake- this is not a neutral factor in his potential campaign, it’s a clear negative.

And please dispense with the “let’s not talk about politics” issue

There is a time and place. Initially, before it was clear the disease was in remission, it wasn't the time or place.

- this disease doesn’t look serious enough to be considered a real personal tragedy, but it does look serious enough to be a political hindrance.

From what I have seen, I disagree. But that's for another day.

He could easily use this as an excuse not to run. So I have to assume he is seriously considering running, and getting out in front of the news, testing the waters for a reaction.

Not likely. Fred was treated successfully three years ago, and in this respect, he's not different then from either Rudy nor McCain. If Fred's cancer is reason for him not to run, then so is Rudy's. For that matter, Dick Cheney's heart condition should have "disqualified" him in 2000 to be Veep, since he might have to take the reins of power if Bush were ever incapacitated in some way.

My prayers are with Fred and his family today.

And it's a shame that there are as many deleted posts on this thread as there are. What kind of sick, dung-throwing hoot-monkeys celebrate a man getting cancer? What is this, Daily Kos?

HERE WE GO FROM ABC NEWS

April 11, 2007 — Former Senator and ABC Radio Senior Analyst Fred Thompson says he has lymphoma. Thompson is mulling a run for the Republican Party's 2008 presidential nomination.

The following is a statement from Thompson read on ABC News Radio today:

"We have all seen the courageous battle that Elizabeth and John Edwards are fighting, and there are so many others. Fortunately, there are an increasing number of good stories because of the medical advances that have been made.

"I have friends in politics, some in Congress, some running for President, and others who have successfully dealt with cancer. It is certainly no respecter of persons and totally non-partisan. That point was driven home to me about 2 1/2 years ago when, shortly after a routine physical, I was diagnosed with what the doctors call an indolent lymphoma. Of the 30-plus kinds of lymphoma this is a "good" kind, if there is such a thing.

"I have had no illness from it, or even any symptoms. My life expectancy should not be affected. I am in remission, and it is very treatable with drugs if treatment is needed in the future—and with no debilitating side effects.

"I am one of the lucky ones. There are many lucky ones today. And for all of our diversity, we share one thing in common—a deep appreciation for the fact that we live in the United States of America and have the best medicine and the best doctors the world has even known."

I haven’t had a chance to go through the whole thread ... my .02, he’s putting this on the table to see what impact it will have before pulling the trigger on running. If it looks like it’s not going to be a big deal from the reaction, polling, etc., he’ll go for it. If it looks like it will be a big deal, he won’t. Pretty simple. I really don’t think it’s a big deal given what we know so far about his condition. But in the real world, the “C” word, and lymphoma is a cancer, is still awfully scary for a lot of folks. So who knows whether it’ll be a big deal or not?

If that’s the case, Fox really screwed up this announcement.

FoxNews really has a poor, poor track record with "breaking news" -- they frequently screw it up, to some extent, in a rush to get it out there fast.

I think that is the kind that Jackie O. died from so quickly. It is very fortunate that Fred has the other kind. I hope he can keep it in remission as he has a very young daughter who needs him (and he needs to see her grow up)!

I saw that statement elsewhere. It does look as though Thompson just thought it best to go ahead and talk about this. That was a good move.

If I ~had to~ snark, I’d just say I wish he had mentioned Tony Snow in the statement. Not a mistake necessarily. But it would have been nice.

Having said all of that, let me just say that as a cancer survivor, cancer sux. Any kind.

Prayers for Fred and his family.

Politically, revealing it without making an announcement about NOT running makes me believe he is running.

If he is going to run, he needs this information out in the public so people don’t think he’s hiding it. If he wasn’t going to run, he wouldn’t have to let people know.

If he wanted to use it as an excuse not to run, he would use it on the day he announced he was not running.

So it seems likely that, given that he isn’t announcing that he just learned it (he’s giving historical information), he is clearing the deck of the issue, to let it percolate through the news cycles and let people get settled about it before he’s a candidate.

It also gets him a news cycle, and a positive one at that, because almost nobody attacks a cancer survivor.
