I think they said it was in remission (from 2004) but it’s back. Praying and waiting for more details.

Ping per our discussion the other day. It seems there was a reason he was holding back.

If it’s manageable he can still run. He may be releasing this now to get people used to the idea, and then announce later. I hope he runs if he’s healthy enough. I have always said that if he can survive the vetting process, he’d be great on a ticket with Rudy or Mitt.

Thanks, I missed that part. His hair had looked extremely thin lately. I wonder if that is a result of treatment.

It is a highly treatable type and IS NOT expected to reduce his life expectancy. He was diagnosed three years back and it is in remission. He will be on Neil Covuta today to discuss this and other issues.
I have a relative who has has this type of Lymphoma 20 years and is now 78 years old.It needs to be monitored along with drug therapy.

Posted at 8:25am on Apr. 11, 2007 Breaking: Fred Thompson Has Cancer. It’s In Remission.
By Erick
Fred Thompson announced this morning that he has cancer. It is in remission. He has no symptoms. He has not had any illness related to it. It is a very treatable form of lymphoma called “indolent lymphoma”. He was diagnosed three years ago.
I’m wondering why he wanted to get it out there until he’s going to be announcing his candidacy soon.
Fred Thompson will talk exclusively to Neal Cavuto this afternoon at 4pm EDT about the issue.

Depending on the cancer, often a patient can live years without much treatment. A doctor may chose “Watch and Wait” - a strategy of waiting until symptoms are such that treatment should proceed. With newer immunotherapies, the era of Watch and Wait may be over as effective treatment may be able to proceed as soon as the lymphoma is detected.

Arlen Specter battled Lymphoma a couple of years ago. Treatment is never pleasant with the barbaric chemo regimens that are out there..but he should have a fairly optimistic prognosis. I hope he will be okay.

If it were Rudy announcing that he had a relapse of prostate cancer, I would be offering up the same sincere prayers that I will be offering for Fred Thompson.
I recall that when Bill Clinton had to have heart surgery, most of us put politics aside and prayed for him as we would for any human being in need.
Some things don’t change here on FR, and I’m glad that is one of them.
The slicing and dicing of our political foes can always wait.

If that’s the case, Fox really screwed up this announcement. They made it sound like it WAS in remission but is back. Sheesh...

My mother had Lymphoma. Had lumps the size of golf balls on her lungs. From the time of her first MRI until they finally diagnosed it after her second biopsy, a period of about 80 days, it was in spontaneous remission. 2 months later it was completely gone without treatment.
Prayers for Fred and family.

I think we are past the time when a diagnose of a manageable disease would automatically put the kibosh on a political career, or any career. People fight all kinds of diseases and they should be given the opportunity to live full lives as they do, if they are able. I said this about Elizabeth Edwards and it’s as true for Fred Thompson.

I doubt that Fred Thompson will be running for the nomination. Why do you doubt that? Thompson knew he had Lymphoma when he first said he might be interested. If this is just getting the news out, it probably indicates that he is more likely than not to throw his hat in the ring.
I hope so!
