"CHICAGO (Reuters) - Package delivery company FedEx Corp. (NYSE:FDX - news) said on Wednesday it agreed to settle a racial discrimination lawsuit against its express unit, FedEx Express, for $53.5 million.

The suit alleged that FedEx Express discriminated against its African-American and Hispanic workers by passing them over for promotion, paying them less than white workers and treating them unfairly in evaluation and disciplinary proceedings."

"Memphis-based FedEx has denied committing any acts of racial discrimination. "There has been no finding of wrongdoing on the part of FedEx," said FedEx spokeswoman Sandra Munoz.

The $53.5 million cost of the settlement will be covered by insurance, Munoz said."

""This is good for Latinos and African Americans at FedEx as it will provide them with more opportunities and fairer compensation," Finberg said. "It will be good for FedEx as the company will have qualified Latinos and African Americans in higher positions.""

No, that would have gotten them fired. And made them apologize to Al Sharpton.

$53.5 million is a bunch to pay for getting rid of a nuisance suit; I suspect they did something pretty raw and got caught.

"Shakedown."

This is just another extortion scheme where Lawyers will pocket $25M+ and the workers will get coupons for discount FedEx shipping.

The courts are run by Lawyers FOR the Lawyers, and instead of ever getting RICO prosecutions started for this racket, or prosecuting for extortion, this will be a Lawyers-for-Lawyers system of wealth redistribution forever.....

"FedEx decided to settle to avoid a lengthy and costly litigation and appeals process, she added."

Shakedown.

Yep. Much easier to sue than to show up to work on time, every day, and actually do your job.

If I have a company I should be free to promote anyone I want and compensate folks at whatever rate I think their work warrants.

That and a buck will get you a cup of coffee.

We have laws in this country. We have made racial discrimination in hiring and promotion illegal. That you own the company is not relevant. Sure, they can quit if they don't like it, but they can also sue you for it - so maybe you should just follow the laws in the first place.

Or, to turn your own statement around at you... If you don't like the laws, go into politics and try to change them.

Why is it never questioned that those who didn't get promoted perhaps did not deserve to get promoted ?

Aww! Make Express like Ground and Home Delivery where they are all Independent Contractors. Then, we can really hear these “passed over” people whine.
