Going back to what one of the players mentioned... What about all of the other innocent people Nifong screwed over... the ones who were not rich and could not afford to defend themselves. Surely there must be some innocent people serving time in jail or prison because of this persecutor.

Someone in NC needs to go over every single case that Nifong's office has handled to ensure that no innocent people were wrongly convicted of any crime. Nifong himself must be prosecuted because the handling of this case could not possibly be the result of negligence. Any honest lawyer would have dropped these charges long ago due to lack of evidence and witness credibility issues. The only possible explanation for this conduct must be malice.

The second sad part of this (after the three guys and their parents went through 13 months of Hell) will be the taxpayers having to fork over money to have EVERY case Nifong's office ever touched. The taint will cost millions, go on for years, and increase the burden on their legal system. What ever the local government pays to the boys will be peanuts compared to the other bill.

I agree with everything that you say above except for your last word. As we've cleaned up our state, we've found plenty of (now ex) government officials who wanted bribes for various government favors.

So I see it as perhaps no accident that 3 rich boys were targeted in another state.

And there are other potential explanations (e.g. political agenda). So I'm hesitant to say that "malice" is the only possible explanation.

They did that with the 'Dirty Thirty' in New York City, and with the cases of a dozen or so New York State Troopers caught 'testilying' in upstate drug cases. Quite a few convicts, some of whom were in fact guilty but had tainted arrests or evidence, had their convictions set aside.

The labs used by Nifong, and the officers who gave sworn testimony in indictments, should all get a careful review. I expect casualties.
