COVENTRY -- An anonymous tip has led Coventry police to the whereabouts of a stolen statue of Nathan Hale at Diana's Pool in Chaplin.
The 3-foot-high bronze cast of the Revolutionary War hero and Coventry native son was in good condition, Police Chief Mark Palmer said this morning. The investigation is continuing.
The statue was reported missing April 4 from the Nathan Hale Homestead in Coventry. It had been sawed off or broken off at the ankles.

There have been a lot of statues being stolen across the country lately, as the price of copper has gone up. Bronze and brass contain copper. Pensacola this last month has had a rash of stolen AC coils from businesses..........

I know all about that, actually.
The company I work for scraps a fair amount of machined brass parts (as well as aluminum castings) every year.
We had about 900 lbs. stolen recently by an employee.
He was such a genius...our logo is cast right into most of the parts.

Who would steal something honoring such a great patriot?Nathan Hale was a miserable patriot. As George S. Patton said, "Now I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country. "

They took it outside of the factory with a forklift during working hours, then came and picked it up over the weekend.

Hale was a brave man; he set an example for other patriots from his time down to the present. And so what? He died, and he died accomplishing practically nothing for his country. I'll trade an ineffective, stupid but brave man any day for an effective, intelligent coward. The history books are littered with dead, brave fools.

Well, *I* think Hale was a great patriot, no matter what others think.
What an interesting family connection!
Mine don’t get any more exciting than Ava Gardner, and also the first wife of Washington Duke (who Duke U. is named for).
To: Kirkwood
Yes, I do know what I’m saying. Nathan Hale was a failure. The fact that he died bravely is inconsequential. He did nothing to further American independence. If he had died 100 times, he still would have been a failure.

I am a RevWar buff, know a bit about Nathan Hale, but do not recall there being a cult dedicated to him. He was a CT school teacher who was passionate about the Revolution. He was ill-trained and ill-prepared for traveling behind enemy lines (it is said, the first thing that gave him away was the buckle on his shoes--teachers would wear them, but not "mechanics").
At any rate, he tried to do good, failed, and then paid the ultimate price for the Patriot cause. For you to bad-mouth him is, IMO, unconscionable. I recommend that some time when you are in Manahttan, go to the NW corner of 3rd Avenue and 65th St. There is a bronze plaque there dedicated to him since this is the place where he was hanged. Perhaps you can commune with his spirit and settle your differences
And, if this is a great day for you, I would hate to see you on a bad one.

I’m amazed that anyone would want an army of cowards over an army of brave men. Your army of cowards will lay down their weapons and run away or surrender. At the very least, the brave serve as an inspiration to others. By your criteria. the GIs who lost their lives at Normandy were brave, but ineffectual since most never got to fire a single shot. And you say you would want an army of the complete opposite? I don’t think you’ve thought this through.

Im amazed that anyone would want an army of cowards over an army of brave men.No, I'm saying I want an army of effective soldiers, spies, etc. over an army of incompetent buffoons. Nathan Hale may have died bravely, but he was an incompetent buffoon who accomplished nothing for his cause. His bravery didn't mean squat in the end. Obviously bravery is preferable to cowardice, but I'll take competence over bravery any day of the week.

Nothing wrong with an occasional iconoclast... So what about the last stand at the Alamo... Or the Spartans at Thermopylae...If you believe the legends, the Alamo delayed Santa Ana and Thermopylae delayed Darius, leading to crucial strategic advantage. I'm not sure if that's really true in either case, but at least the side that sacrificed claims some advantage from the loss. I don't think anybody has ever pretended that the revolutionaries gained anything out of the life or death of Nathan Hale, outside of his silly but memorable last words. To be an effective martyr, you should have at least done something worthy of martyrdom.

Excellent...when I lived in Manhattan, I would leave flowers at the base of the plaque on July Fourth weekends.
He was hung there since at that time this area was a clearing in the woods and the Brits set up camp around there.

Nathan Hale may have died bravely, but he was an incompetent buffoon who accomplished nothing for his cause. His bravery didn't mean squat in the end. Seriously, I think "incompetent buffoon" is not the most appropriate choice of words. By his actions, he has inspired several generations of Americans. He has provided an example of courage that many have sought to emulate.
