War product of 'obstinancy' (Obama)

ATLANTA – Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama said the war in Iraq is a product of President Bush’s “stubbornness and obstinacy.”

“The war is about an administration that is trying to preserve its own political viability,” Obama told a crowd in Atlanta. “We have to keep up ratcheting up the pressure every way and every week to tell the president it’s time to change course, to tell the president it’s time to bring the troops home.”

The Republican Bush administration and the Democratic-controlled Congress are at a standoff over $100 billion in emergency funding to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Senate and the House of Representatives have passed similar supplemental funding measures for the war that set limits for the U.S. presence there.

Both bills must be reconciled before the legislation is sent to the White House. Bush has said he will veto any war- funding measure that contains a timetable for troop withdrawal.

More than 20,000 people attended Obama’s rally at the Georgia Institute of Technology, according to Michael Hodgson, the school’s fire marshal. A Democratic presidential candidate hasn’t won the state of Georgia since 1992.

Obama, an Illinois senator, eclipsed Democratic rival New York Sen. Hillary Clinton during the first quarter in raising money for the primary campaign with $23.5 million.

Bush, in today’s weekly radio address, said the inability to resolve differences on war funding is putting an unnecessary strain on the military.

Troops Waiting

“Our troops are waiting for the funds,” Bush said. “The longer Congress delays, the worse the impact on the men and women of the armed forces will be.”

Obama, as he often does on the campaign trail, highlighted his early opposition to the war in Iraq as an Illinois state senator in 2003. He said Bush was creating a culture of fear in America.

“When it doesn’t work, when suddenly Iraq happens or Katrina happens and people see that you can’t spin people standing on roof tops without food and water, you can’t spin bombing and killings in Iraq,” Bush administration officials “blame it on gay people or Democrats,” Obama said.

The audience was a mix of college students, working parents, blacks and whites, Democrats and Republicans. Obama thanked his crowd, noting its diversity.

“This scene is a testimony to the progress that we’ve made as a nation,” Obama said. It was the second largest crowd Obama has drawn in the two months since he declared his candidacy. The largest was 21,500 people in Austin, Texas, on Feb. 22.

Southern Swing

Obama is swinging through the South. He visited North and South Carolina yesterday and is scheduled to campaign in Florida tomorrow before heading to Milwaukee. An announcer at today’s rally asked the crowd to help Obama win the primary in South Carolina, which has the fourth contest in the nation.

Volunteers collected names and contact information of all those at the Obama rally. While the rally was free, attendees had to obtain tickets online by clicking through a section asking them for donations as well as to register to vote.

Lavonda Crutcher, 43, said she drove 45 minutes from Kennesaw, Georgia, with her husband and three young children to attend the Obama rally, her first political event ever. Crutcher, a customer service specialist with the Red Cross, said she “just wanted to give him a shot.”

“He’s one of color, so I just wanted to see if we could get one into office,” said Crutcher, who said she’s also still considering Clinton.

Kizzy Jones, 24, drove four hours from her college in Winston Salem, North Carolina, to hear Obama speak. While she’s also considering Clinton and former North Carolina Senator John Edwards, she was “really, really excited” to see Obama speak today.

“He seems so fresh, so different,” Jones said. “He’s outside of the others in Washington. He brings a new perspective.”

War product of obstinacy...

For once Osama, you have it exactly right. It's the obstinace of the "holy" book that you studied as child that's the problem.

'Kill all the Jews',it says.Conquer all infidels and either force them to kneel before the Prophet Child Molester or behead them.

Yes,Mr Osama, the world has, through time (as well as recently) seen the obstinace.

I must congratulate you,a guy who's so clean (and articulate) for your effective advocacy for the members of the 9th Century death cult among whom you lived...and "worshiped"...as a child.

And trust me a Democrat won’t win this time either.

If you're talking nationally, don't be so sure.Hillary! would have a pretty good chance of winning and Edwards would have an excellent chance (he'd carry all of John F'ing Kerry's states and VA as well).

Frankly, I think that Obama is just ignorant, and is repeating what he has heard other Dem “Statesmen” in their ignorance say.

We are a military family, and I am greatly offended.

Actually I was referring to GA. We have as a state become even more conservative, a loon assemblage at GA Tech not withstanding.

Atlanta is a blue dot in a sea of red but does not have the power to influence the state vote as a whole.

Personally I don’t see Edwards lasting until the end. I think he’s going to run out of steam pretty quickly.

Hillary I keep putting in the unknown block, it’s pretty hard to say where the wind is going to blow her, because it looks like she has gotten a bit rudderless as of late.

Obama is only being propped up by the left because of the color of his skin. He doesn’t even come close to being qualified to lead this country at such an important time. A candidate can’t win an election with the votes of the far left and the African American vote. I predict he loses in a landslide if he can get past the queen of liberal stupidity.

Unfortunately, I've heard other black women say the same thing. Usually working-class high-school-only educated ones. This is what frustrates me about "democracy". Citizens like this give 0 thought to what the candidate stands for or means. The latch on to race or gender or attractiveness. Such people, IMHO, should not be afforded the franchise of voting. They would put a monster in charge who would enslave them. Not that I believe Obama is a monster.
