Gun bill gets shot down by panel (VA Tech - On Drudge)
Roanoke.com ^ | January 31, 2006 | Greg Esposito

Posted on 04/16/2007 9:48:10 AM PDT by Anti-Bubba182

A bill that would have given college students and employees the right to carry handguns on campus died with nary a shot being fired in the General Assembly.

House Bill 1572 didn't get through the House Committee on Militia, Police and Public Safety. It died Monday in the subcommittee stage, the first of several hurdles bills must overcome before becoming laws.

The bill was proposed by Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah County, on behalf of the Virginia Citizens Defense League. Gilbert was unavailable Monday and spokesman Gary Frink would not comment on the bill's defeat other than to say the issue was dead for this General Assembly session.

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."

Del. Dave Nutter, R-Christiansburg, would not comment Monday because he was not part of the subcommittee that discussed the bill.

Most universities in Virginia require students and employees, other than police, to check their guns with police or campus security upon entering campus. The legislation was designed to prohibit public universities from making "rules or regulations limiting or abridging the ability of a student who possesses a valid concealed handgun permit ... from lawfully carrying a concealed handgun."

The legislation allowed for exceptions for participants in athletic events, storage of guns in residence halls and military training programs.

Last spring a Virginia Tech student was disciplined for bringing a handgun to class, despite having a concealed handgun permit. Some gun owners questioned the university's authority, while the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police came out against the presence of guns on campus.

In June, Tech's governing board approved a violence prevention policy reiterating its ban on students or employees carrying guns and prohibiting visitors from bringing them into campus facilities.

The Shooter goes in knowing he has a free fire zone until the police come no one is likely to have a weapon to stop him. He can take his time and take careful aim.

To hell with this, I’m a full time student and after today, my .45 is going in my back pack. It is better to be tried by 12 than carried by 8.

Actually, I take this article as progress. When a legislator can propose such a law without being immediately labeled a nutcase, things are changing. It took Missouri a couple of attempts to get concealed carry, but they eventually did. It took an overriden veto in Kansas. Give this a few years and we may see different results.

If VA Tech had no policy whatever they would be better off.

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker shot his mouth off and the killer knows it is open season. I am glad Drudge featured this article.

I know the media will publish against gun availability generally and not consider the deterence value or defense value. They are content to let the students lie down and comply like good little sheep while they are duly slaughtered.

Sickening. One trained, licensed and armed student, or cop, or for that matter janitor in the right place could have averted this tragedy.

Here’s what would have happened, had the bill passed: the gunman would have killed one or two students, been permanently put out of commission by law abiding heroes, and the whole issue would have been blamed on the passage of this bill: “SEE! We need fewer guns on campus, not more! THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS!!” Nobody but a conservative would have predicted the outcome of twenty dead and dozens injured.

It would be the whole “everyone’s equally guilty” ploy all over again. Guns in the hands of heroes, guns in the hands of bloodthirsty murderers, when will it ever stop!?

Hincker needs to explain how safe the school population feels today, vs. yesterday!

His attitude aided & abetted today’s shooter at Virginia Tech.

One gun in that dorm could have saved many lives.

Muggers, rapists, & terrorists must be smiling today.

Larry Hincker is a liberal fool. He and his university cops could not defend the students slaughtered today, and they certainly did not keep weapons out of the hands of the killer on campus. He ought to have his face rubbed in his foolish words of last year, and the university should be sued by the parents of the victims.

Before coming to Virginia Tech, Hincker worked for 14 years in various corporate communications positions including manager of Public Information for a division of Westinghouse in Washington and employee communications manager for a division of Rockwell International. Hincker studied architecture, spent 10 years as a corporate photographer, has a bachelor’s degree from Brooks Institute, and an MBA from Virginia Tech.

If there are drunken college kids in engineering classes I doubt that they will be there long. We aren’t talking about parties on Friday night, we are talking about people being able to protect themselves in areas such as a school. Why be in one location where you can protect yourself and in another where you are a sitting duck?

Media Hoe on MnNBC already harping that “all it takes in Virginia to get a handgun, is a driver’s licence”.

All: I'm posting from U.Va., Tech's cross-state rival. Believe me, the folks here generally do not actively enforce the rules in dorms with regards to weapons, drugs, alcohol. Any enforcement is passive (e.g., an underage student is spotted drinking alcohol on the steps of a dorm building).

I would not be surprised if the situation at Tech is similar.

Utah (and Israel and others) have it right.

Law-abiding citizens with CCW on campus, and other places out in public, are just the people who can STOP this kind of sh*t in its tracks, saving MANY lives and killing the perp.

When will our wimp legislators ever learn?

Idiots. Does the Virginia General Assembly think keeping universities gun-free will prevent future massacres like today's? Yeah, that's the ticket - punish the criminal by disarming every law-abiding university student and employee.

MSM reporters to police: "The inevitable question parents will be asking is 'How could this have been prevented...?"

The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that's good.
-- George Washington

The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed.
--Alexander Hamilton, The Federalist Papers at 184-188

To preserve liberty it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them.
-- Richard Henry Lee

[A]rms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. ... Horrid mischief would ensue were [the law-abiding] deprived the use of them.
-- Thomas Paine

It is your responsibility to protect yourself and your family from criminals. If you rely on the government for protection, you are going to be at least disappointed and at worst injured or killed.
-- from A Message from the Sheriff on the back of a victims' rights pamphlet
by five-term San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters (L) of Telluride, Colorado

Laws that forbid the carrying of arms…disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes…Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.
-- Thomas Jefferson, "Commonplace Book," 1774-1776,
quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764.
