Iraq pullout must 'maintain US prestige'
Herald Sun ^ | 17 April 2007

AUSTRALIA must ensure that any troop pullout from Iraq maintained the prestige of the US as a world power, Israel's prime minister said today.

Ehud Olmert said he did not want to revisit whether the US should have gone into Iraq but said Australia and the US had to leave some time.

"You are there. Others are there. The question is how should America pull out and the other forces should pull out from Iraq," Mr Olmert said on ABC radio from Jerusalem.

"I think they should pull out in a manner which will maintain the prestige and the perception of America as a major power.

"Why? Because if the perception will be different then the possible consequences and ramifications will be very unpleasant for the moderate forces in our part of the world. And that is something we are worried about."

Mr Olmert said he was not saying that US and Australia and other forces should never leave Iraq. "What I say it is your decision to make. It is America's decision to make," he said.

Pull out of Iraq and watch any prestige be flushed away.

We tried the “peace with honor” cut and run in 1973. By 1975, our “prestige” was gone and we were known as a ‘paper tiger’ who won’t stand alongside allies any longer.

The U.S. is the turn of the century Ottoman Empire - now on the wrong side of a series of costly wars.

If you’re not familiar with the Ottoman Empire, that’s an indication of the kind of trouble we’re in.

The US is now an “Ottoman Empire?” Please list all those we hold in our “Empire,” please.

And yes, I am familiar with the Ottoman Empire. Breaking it up after WW1 is what made the Middle East what it is today. Too bad the promise of land west of the Jordan River going to Jews was reniged on.

But please, fell free to list all those countries we have taken over and hold hostage in our “Empire.”

Ehud Olmert is a nut. The only pullout the free world needs is Olmert’s end of mandate.

This guy is the first israeli PM who lost a war. Shame on him.

I do see indications of our education system failing.

Well, technically in this war, we are on both sides. Many of our liberal brethren joined the other side a long time ago. Many are in the Congress.

The President is on the right side of this. The Left is shameless.

We’re not leaving Iraq, any more than we’re leaving Europe and Japan. We may leave Iraq security to the Iraqi forces, while we fall back to the bases we’ve established in Iraq-but we’re not leaving those bases (though we may scale back forces) and hence we will not leave Iraq. The US needs bases in the ME for a variety of reasons, and the saudi bases are going to be lost to us eventually (which is why our forces there have been cut to the bone). So we will have to stay in Iraq .

We are in a global war to protect our freedom and our way of life and prevent the world from plunging into a new Dark Age controlled by a 7th century islamic terrorist society. The war in Iraq is the major front in this war, the terrorist organizations like Al Qaeda and the terrorist regimes like Iran and Syria have chosen Iraq to be the their center battleground against us, and it is in Iraq where we are annihilating the terrorists by the tens of thousands.

I agree. But, look back to 1973 and the Democrats controlling Congress then.

I sure hope you can find a better way to qualify your remark than disparaging anyone who has bothered reading it.

Why don't you give it a try.

Re: your tagline. You almost verbatim repeated the medieval formula of Emperor and Pope, or [equally medieval] British one about the King and the Archbishop of Canterbury. There’s not much new under the sun.
