Madrid, 17 April (AKI) - Al-Qaeda's jailed leader in Spain, Syrian born Imad Eddin Barakat on Tuesday told a Madrid court that the deadly 11 March 2004 attacks on commuter trains in the city were "inadmissible." But he said they took place in the context of the war in Iraq in which Spanish troops were at that time taking part. "In our countries, our cultures, war generates hatred. Abuse generates hatred," Barakat, also known as Abu Dahdah, told the court in halting Spanish. He was being questioned by the prosecution in the high-security trial of 29 people suspected of involvement in the Madrid attacks which killed 191 people and injured 1,800. Many of the key suspects in the trial are of Moroccan and most of North African origin. The trial started in February.
"Islam does not allow such things," Barakat stated, adding that he had learned everything he knew about the Madrid attacks "from the mass media." If the Madrid attackers were Muslims they must be followers of the fundamentalist Salafist doctrine espoused by Moroccan jihadists, Barakat claimed. "I only know the doctrine, not any of the individuals," he stated, quoted by El Periodico daily's website.
Investigators believe Barakat could be one of the "brains" behind the Madrid attacks, as there is evidence that he was in contact with one of the suspected bombers, Jamal Zougam, a 33-year-old Moroccan. Zougam owned a store in Madrid's high-immigrant district Lavapies. Barakat claims he just brought goods there.
Barakat told the court he "vaguely recognised" the face of Serhane Ben Abdelmajid Fakhet, one of the seven leading Madrid bombing suspects who blew themselves up in an apartment in the Madrid suburb of Leganes three weeks after the bombings, when he saw TV images of Fakhet.
Barakat is serving a 12 year jail sentence for heading an al-Qaeda' cell in Spain that was smashed after the 11 September 2001 attacks on the United States which killed 3,000 people. Barakat, who was also convicted of "conspiracy to commit murder," in the '9/11' attacks, was originally given a 27 year prison sentence that was reduced to 12 on appeal. He has been in prison since 2001.
Spain's former centre-right Jose María Aznar lost the general election in Spain that took place three days after the Madrid train bombings - which had a profound effect on Spaniards. His leftwing successor, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero fulfilled an election pledge and withdrew Spain's troops from Iraq.
“In our countries, our cultures, war generates hatred. Abuse generates hatred,”
In our countries, our cultures, EVERYTHING generates hatred.
