snip~

If it was Sterling (Marlin) or one of those guys I think everyone would have saw it for what it is. This (sport) is so corporate, so sponsor-, so funding- and money-driven that people have forgotten some of the real core values of what it’s like to be in the garage and what it’s like to know the other guys on the other teams and be friends with them.” [AMEN]

Earnhardt searched for DEI VP of competition Richie Gilmore to ask for approval before hopping into the No. 5 car last Sunday to substitute for Busch — who was under the impression the car was toast. When Earnhardt could not find Gilmore, he sought out his crew chief Tony Eury Jr. for consent, then rolled. Consequently, Earnhardt not only helped a friend, he helped himself.

“There were only 20 laps left in the race and they needed me to run seven or nine or so we had to be quick about it,” Earnhardt said. “I learned a little bit about what their cars drive like and relayed that information to Tony Jr.

“From a competitive standpoint, even though the car’s wrecked, it’s a good opportunity to get in there and just see what the other half is living like. Not that I can look in there and see what springs and shocks they got, but I could definitely tell about the attitude of the car, the grip that car had and take that information and try to work with it.”

Hendrick Motorsports senior driver Jeff Gordon was amazed when he heard Earnhardt was in the car.

“I was shocked and surprised that, one, somebody asked him to get in, and that there was even a reason for him to get in,” Gordon said. “The other thing is that he agreed to drive. It was very cool, though. That was an awesome thing that he did for a friend and speaks volumes about Junior. The smile on his face getting out of the car said a lot about Junior, too. Obviously surprised.”

Gordon added that “there’s only certain teams” with a legitimate shot of winning the championship. Hendrick, Roush-Fenway, Richard Childress Racing and Gibbs Racing, were the operations that topped his list.

“I think Junior knows if he wants to win a title he’s going to have to go to a different team,” Gordon said Thursday after winning his 59th career pole and third at Phoenix. “We don’t have a spot open, but I’d love to be his teammate. I’d love to see him with a team of our caliber. That would be interesting.” [:( OY]

G'morning, WCG. I was just going to post that article when I saw you beat me to it. :)

I especially found this interesting, and I believe Jeff said it to help boost Junior's negotiating position. One thing about Jeff is that he's very, very smart about the business side of racing; about business in general, for that matter.

Gordon added that "there's only certain teams" with a legitimate shot of winning the championship. Hendrick, Roush-Fenway, Richard Childress Racing and Gibbs Racing, were the operations that topped his list.

"I think Junior knows if he wants to win a title he's going to have to go to a different team," Gordon said Thursday after winning his 59th career pole and third at Phoenix. "We don't have a spot open, but I'd love to be his teammate. I'd love to see him with a team of our caliber. That would be interesting."

Talk like that coming from Jeff Gordon will only strengthen Junior's negotiating position. It's a subtle threat and a clear statement of a truth that Theresa may have convinced herself not to believe. "We don't have a spot open, but I'd love to be his teammate." Translation: "If Junior were really available, you just watch how fast we'd open a spot." There's been talk at HMS for some time about possibly starting a fifth team. That got shelved after the plane crash, but it's always a possibility. Although I sure wouldn't mind it if Kyle Busch were sent packing. ;-)

RE: Mikey not Qualifying

I heard an off-handed remark on ESPN2 about the Toyotas having horsepower problems. Anyone else know anything?

Personally, I am enjoying watching Toyota struggle. I enjoy watching Vickers not make the race (I still have hard feelings about Talladega last year). And I WAS enjoying watching Mikey struggle. But I am beginning to feel sorry for him. :-(

Everything was great (well, except for one bigger-than-normal step that reached down and twisted my left ankle, but there's ice for that). Still haven't recharged the laptop to retrieve the pics I downloaded to the laptop from their camera (in my semi-capable hands because I didn't get it in time to change the settings until most of the way through) as well as my dad's.

ESPN is reporting that DEI is offering Jr majority ownership, but Jr's denying that.

"ESPN is reporting that DEI is offering Jr majority ownership, but Jr's denying that."

I find it extremely odd for an owner to announce the details of a contract offer before it's signed particularly when the person on the other end of the contract is in Arizona. Jr has said there is a lot more to deal with than just that percentage, plus she threw in the BOD thing which has to ok any changes. Why? She hasn't had a BOD to ok anything so far.

Why put it in the media? So when he declines he will look like the bad guy.

Awwwwwwww poor little Bushie Shrub. I hate his little fuzzy growth on his chin! Maybe he can join Sanjaya on a tour somewhere. lol

I'm concerned about the DEI entertainment company announcement I posted further up thread. DEI is a racing company, not memorabilia, not movies etc. If they can devote all the money coming from "entertainment" to racing then I'm in, but I doubt it. I keep remembering Teresa saying in the media "the ball's in his court whether he wants to be a race car driver or a public personality." The fact remains that things are not as they should be at DEI, they even have to go to Jr Motorsports to borrow a piece of equipment for the cars.

Childress has stated publicly when the time comes if Jr leaves "I hope he comes to talk to me first"

Given the connection between Childress and Senior, I can understand why. But Junior needs to be his own man and do what he thinks is best for him and his future. Personally, I hope he can wrest control of DEI away from Theresa. If that's not possible, then I would love to see him go to one of the top three or four organizations in the sport, where he can drive top class equipment for a few years until he can build up JR Motorsports.

In the meantime, I hope the sport's resident idiots (like Spencer and Waltrip) stay out of it. The smart businessmen, like Childress, Jeff, Rick Hendrick and others, are helping to give Junior a ton of leverage. I don't doubt Budweiser's had something to say behind the scenes, too.. Everyone else should STFU. Junior is not a 10-yr-old anymore.

Top-10 Reason Dale Earnhardt Inc. Is Starting An Entertainment Division

On Thursday Max Siegel, president of global operations for Dale Earnhardt Inc., announced the company would be the starting the Earnhardt Entertainment Division.

Why? That’s the big question.

“We are looking forward to offering rich entertainment programming and innovative content,” Siegel said. “There’s such great synergy there and it’s our goal to bring the two entities together to enjoy a mutually-beneficial relationship while keeping our focus to connect to millions of fans.”

We think there might be some other reasons for it.

With that we bring you the Top 10 Reasons Why Dale Earnhardt Inc. is starting an entertainment division

1. -— It’s obviously clear to anyone watching that Dale Earnhardt Jr. is not getting enough publicity.

2. -— Four words: Paul Menard’s facial hair.

3. -— Everybody knows acting is Junior’s true calling.

4. -— This whole NASCAR thing is on the way down, have to be ready when Brian France decides to shut it down and jump to the NFL.

5. -— Anybody ever heard Martin Truex Jr. on karaoke night? The boy can sing, he needs an outlet for that.

6. -— Fans have been clamoring for years for “Days of Thunder 2 – Cole Trickle’s Revenge.”

7. -— Someone has to take down Suge Knight and Death Row Records, why can’t it be DEI?

8. -— Steve Spielberg heard about John Henry’s partnership with Jack Roush, wants a way in now.

9. -— Jay Z is looking for new studio space. Since DEI just uses all the shop equipment at JR Motorsports, there’s plenty of room to work with.

10. -— For years Herbie The Love Bug has hogged the spotlight for celebrity cars, the No. 8 Chevy deserves to get some of that love.
