It’s all very terrifying. I hope terrorists aren’t taking notes.

Fact is that a person cannot be committed to a mental institution against their will unless they have harmed themselves or another.

Used to be that people could be confined against their will. That led to terrible abuse for a variety of illegitmate reasons.

The law was changed and the unintended consequences leave us all vulnerable to people like Cho.

The solution, there is none.

As for the poet, she rallied the students from their near stupor of sadness, if only for a short while.

I don’t condemn her for that.

Please be careful. I think you misread and jumped to an erroneous conclusion. By “wackos,” I was referring to leftist moonbats, not psychos. In fact, I just wrote a piece about when mental illness crosses the line and becomes pure evil, as I feel it did in Cho’s case.

Much as certain athletes are passed thru university attending no classes at all.

You said — “If she demanded he be expelled, there must not be any warning mechanism to attract the attention of higher ups.”

Yeah, she recognized the problem more so than anyone else, apparently. There was a *big failure* in the university — itself and the police department and the counseling system.

Nor do I. Well said.

I find the disconnect fascinating also.

I don't really want to spend too much time thinking about another leftwing mind, but ...Perhaps this episode falls into that overflowing category:Libs Running from the Truth.

IOW, think of the various examples of lib hypocrisy...working against school choice, but themselves using private schools...hiring body guards, but ranting about gun control...AlGore's huge energy consumption...

So Ms. Giovanni was seriously concerned about the student's danger level, but after the fact, resorts to her pathetic liberal phrases...

Wow! You need to take a breath. You are really misreading. And, btw, my niece graduated from Virginia Tech.

This picture of her reminds me of Angela Davis, circa 1970.

I agree...I was sitting there watching and hearing the response and I am sure I had a quizzical look of confusion. I still don’t get it; but, I am glad to know I am not alone!

You said — “Uh, that’s why the title of this thread is Nikki Giovanni changes her tune.”

Different formats. One is a gathering for everyone’s sorrow at the loss, when the President was there and all the officials were there. That’s not a time when you say those things.

When she was interviewed, though — she did say what she thought — and very strongly and clearly. Now, *that* was the proper time to speak out on the issue, not at a memorial type of service...

I understand the two different settings. In fact, I know that other FReepers understand the different settings, too, because FReepers have many times criticized Democrats for making funerals (and the “like”) a political platform, instead of a memorial service.

And now, I see some FReepers saying that it should something other than a memorial type of service, for mourning and for encouragement. That’s the kind of speech she gave there — even if the ideas were not the same type of comforting ideas that you or I would have had.

Regards,
Star Traveler

I knew what you meant.

BTW...I used to wear an afro. And my hair was once nappy. Can't say that word offends me in the slightest, but then, I don't walk around with a chip on my shoulder blaming America for my shortcomings either.

That was probably her intent.

Oh — I think they *are* taking notice of this — very much so.

However, I’m not going down the conspiracy track like some of the “nuts” on Free Republic and saying that he was some kind of Al Qaida operative — or — that he was some kind of Islamic “Jihadist”. That’s simply as crazy as the shooter himself was crazy.

BUT — I do know (from what I’ve read) that the terrorists *are taking aim* at our schools and they *do intend* to produce a massacre many times greater than what we saw with this shooter.

So, yes! They are taking notice...

Star Traveler

Well, in the spirit of being polite, I'll certainly acknowledge that you are entitled to your opinion.

Specifically, what did she say to denounce the killer?

Also, it’s not the media’s job to denounce the killer anyway, so I wouldn’t expect it from them.

I read through both sides of the article and she seems to believe this event has something to do with baby elephants and AIDs in Africa. I fail to see the connection; and all I gather from her words is that she is likely to be a nut too.
