WEST SACRAMENTO: Teen arrested in attack on train engineer - Youths allegedly beat him with rocks
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 4/19/7 | Michael Cabanatuan

Amtrak police have arrested a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of assaulting a Capitol Corridor engineer who was dragged from his train and attacked with rocks and bottles.

Vernae Graham, an Amtrak spokeswoman, said the boy, whose name was not released because of his age, was caught shortly after the attack and arrested Tuesday. Another juvenile who was also held for questioning was released, she said.

The engineer was attacked after a group of youths stood on the tracks and halted the train Monday around 10:15 p.m. The engineer opened a door when a conductor was threatened by the group, authorities said.

Amtrak police are continuing to investigate the attack and are searching for four to six more suspects. The motive for the assault remains under investigation, Graham said.

The attack occurred as Capitol Corridor train 546, which started in San Jose, passed through West Sacramento and was nearing the end of its run in Sacramento. The train was running slowly because of reports of trespassers on or near the tracks as it approached the I Street Bridge across the Sacramento River.

The engineer stopped when he saw five to seven juveniles standing on the tracks, and the conductor stepped off the train to clear the tracks, Graham said. When the engineer saw the crowd threatening the conductor, the engineer went to help and opened the train door. He was dragged from the train and attacked, she said.

They have to go where the tracks are:’) I like riding the train. Coach is miserable but the sleepers are nice. I’ve never had any problems with passengers. This track attacking was new to me though.

I saw a news clip where a train engineer kept his head low as he entered Chicago. He said sometimes people lined up and pelted stones and shot at them. I guess it was considered a “sport”.

I have only used private rooms on the train, but I found the scenery depressing on the east coast and the crime amazing. We stopped a number of times to meet police cars to take a criminal off the train.

"What is next, ban rocks and bottles?"

however I do believe rocks and bottles should be registered....../ sarc

No need to register them.

Just make it illegal for non-adults to possess them; and issue permits to carry to qualified adults, who have passed a saftey & proficiency course & background check.

Maybe a waiting period, and a limit on how many can be possessed; size/weight limits; how many can be obtained per month.

Make it illegal to artificially point, sharpen, or otherwise alter them....

I’ve only gone West once. All the others have been from Houston to Florida. I’ve not had any problems and the scenery was nice. I was thinking about going by train to DC in Oct. Maybe I won’t. Sounds bad.

Since this involves employees of a railroad, isn’t this a federal crime?

Chickensoup, Can you elaborate on ‘the crime on the train and around it’ please? Just because I have not ridden the train recently.

Mostly robberies that I could discern. I certainly locked my door throughout the entire trip and only let the porter in.

Oh and one fight
