Rudolph Giuliani’s lead over his Republican presidential rivals has dropped, according to a new poll – which also showed ominous results for second-place GOP candidate John McCain.
A late-February Washington Post-ABC News poll gave former New York City Mayor Giuliani 44 percent of the vote among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. In the new Post-ABC poll, that number has dropped to 33 percent, while Sen. McCain held steady at 21 percent.
Giuliani’s drop could be attributed in part to the possible entry of former Sen. Fred Thompson into the race, according to the Post. Thompson ran third in the new poll, with 9 percent, tying him with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich got 6 percent of the vote, down from 15 percent in February.
Also, Giuliani has lost support among white evangelical Protestants, women, those over age 45 and veterans.

I think that early in the 2000 Republican Presidential primary, McCain had a lead similar to Rudy’s current one.

If campaign operatives for other candidates have joined the fray it’s a good thing. The sooner the word about Rudy’s history gets out the better. As soon as Fred joins the contest expect a major shift in the numbers.
Fred has cancer. Newt has adultery. Newt, Mitt and Rudy all have draft avoidance/evasion...whatever. John has age and unreliabililty. Who’s next?

Nothing in this poll indicates that Rudy will not win the nomination. It is amusing to see the Rudyphobes crowing though their candidates are not even breaking 10%. Apparently they are clueless to the fact that the candidate who gets 30% or better will win enough primaries to clinch the nomination.
We’ll hear all about it if he’s nominated.
The MSM won’t play it that when/if any of them are nominated.

And what do make of the Fox News poll that just came out?
Compared to the previous Fox News poll, Rudy is at 35% (-1), McCain is at 16% (-4), Thompson is at 8% (-1), and Romney is at 10% (+4). I guess you can say some of McCain's support went to Romney.
