"...I have been really surprised by people here critical of a parent being a parent..."

hleewilder, I could not disagree with this statement more forcefully. What this man said to his daughter is NOT parenting. You sound like you had a rough life growing up, but that is not, repeat, NOT parenting. It might seem that way to you because that is all you knew growing up, but someone who speaks to a child like that has no business being involved in any way whatsoever raising that child.

I apologize if I have piled on you, but what you said is just not right. That is NOT a case of a parent being a parent.

If my daughter is supposed to call me every such and such a day at such and such a time, then she better make damned sure she’s on that phone, and I don’t care if she’s six or sixty. That’s her Dad: show some respect.

My hubby has a very long "fuse" and would crawl over broken glass for his daughters, but noting gets his goat like when we are trying to reach our oldest on her cel phone and it's turned off or it' s not with her.

And nothing, but nothing makes a lesson stick like knowing that she made her daddy angry.

[...no problem with illegally obtained wiretap of House
Republicans that wound up in Jim McDermott’s possession...]

Or when that sweet old couple recorded Newt Gingrich’s
cell phone conversation from a recording device they
just “happened” to have in their car, as they just “happened”
to find themselves traveling behind Newt on the highway.

So when your daughter leaves her cellphone off, does her father call her a pig?

I think the think that matters here is that each child is unique. Each has an individual soul created by God and temporarily entrusted to parents. Not every child can be disciplined the way you describe with your sons — to some children, and often it is the very intelligent children who are conscientious and eager to succeed in fulfilling expectations, verbal abuse can be toxic and devastating.

And this is a little girl we are talking about. At eleven, she has the hormone thing just starting up, and the psychological need to have her femininity affirmed by her father, not reduced to gutter language. She cannot be expected to take this kind of abuse, unless you want her to turn out a leftie.

So, they split in 2001 and the custody battle is still raging?

How much money have their lawyers made? And can't the judge just say "this is how it's going to be, get out of my court and get on with your lives."

I hope the girl has some rational adults in her life to balance the lunatics who are her parents.

Apology not accepted jerk!

I'll never know if "30 Rock" is a good show or not. I have held my own boycott against anything that you have been connected with, Arec Barwin (sic), since your vehement tirade against Henry Hyde and the other House Managers at the Impeachment trial of former Pres. Clinton.

You deserve prison time for abuse of your daughter. You should be fired immediately from your job for moral turpitude. The only job you deserve is Three Card Monte Shill in downtown Manhattan.

“The problem is that this is a “PRIVATE” conversation. Not a public broadcast.”

It’s only a PRIVATE conversation if BOTH sides of the conversation decide to keep it private. If ONE side of the conversation decides, after having been shat upon by the other side, to take the conversation and broadcast it to humiliate the other side, it’s her right to do so. The daughter’s right? Not as an unemancipated minor, but certainly the mother and guardians’ right. If both sides of a conversation want to keep it private, unless it’s a criminal conspiracy they have a reasonable right to that privacy. But one side of a conversation has no right to assert “privacy” as a shield behind which he verbally abuses the other. The abused side has every right in the world to throw the thing into public to humilate the jackass who berated her. Which is precisely what was done here. He made fun of his daughter on national television, then called and berated her in a voicemail. And she (or her mother) (or both) retaliated by letting him make a jackass out of himself on national television with his own words. HA! There’s no unilateral right to privacy. It’s a two way street. If you treat somebody like crap in private, they have every right to broadcast it and destroy your reputation in public. This has nothing to do with the state. The state didn’t broadcast the message. The RECIPIENT did. And she got him back real good by doing so. HA AGAIN!

So when your daughter leaves her cellphone off, does her father call her a pig?

And threaten to come out to see her for a whole day the following week to straighten her out and then get on a plane to go back home?

I’m sorry, and I am not a big Alex Baldwin fan, but if he didn’t care about his daughter, then he wouldn’t even bother..

Not necessarily. It may be about control & domination. And some people only want custody of the children because the other parent does. Horrible as it is, sometimes it's just about revenge.

And she didn't "record" the conversation. He left it himself on an answering machine/voicemail with the knowledge it would be recorded. His faux apology came from a "spokesperson". She didn't need to record it. And time will tell if he's deserving of respect. At the moment he appears to be an out of control lunatic. One I would be protecting my daughter from. No good parent would deliberately subject their child to that type of behavior.

And what’s even MORE ironic is Alec Baldwin playing cousin Jimmy Swaggart in the movie, Great Balls of Fire, with Dennis Quaid playing Jerry Lee Lewis.

” I probably have anger-related issues that require years of expensive ‘therapy’ that will help me pinpoint my violent nature with the rough manner in which I was potty-trained.”

The good news is, that after more than two years without a post, this thread inspired you to speak out again.

From TMZ: "After telling Dave that his 11-year-old was "doing great," Baldwin regaled the live audience with a story about Ireland's new affinity for dancing in public, then playfully mocked a few of her favorite moves. When Dave asked if Ireland's new passion was embarrassing for him, Alec replied, "Hey, she could be out stealing cars."

You know, it's always a good idea to make fun of your child, especially on national tv. What would be no big deal for an adult or even a teenage boy could be devastatingly mortifying for an 11 year old girl. I do not know if she watched this, but if she did...I can understand why she might not want to talk to him in the morning.

Just like his apology, his rant was all about him.

Fully agreed. We have talked about much the same thing over at this thread earlier today:

Alec Baldwin 'to keep mouth shut' after rant at daughter

Both parents are left-wing liberals. And yet more examples of liberalism as a "disease". They're just angry, angry people.

Gee, a post I an relate to!

I sent the link of this to my daughter on the other side of the U.S....she listened THEN called me right away to ask what the heck that was. She hadn’t heard it in the media yet. One of the first things she said was that HER dad would NEVER talk like that to her even at 23, let alone 11.

With civility like Baldwin’s version it’s no wonder the custody battle still rages on.
