Israeli Arab Balad party chair MK Azmi Bishara resigned from the Knesset on Sunday, submitting his resignation at Israel's embassy in Cairo.
Bishara was quoted Saturday as saying in Egypt that he was considering staying abroad because he feared a long term jail sentence and an end to his political career.
A court-imposed gag order prohibits publication of suspicions against Bishara or details of police investigations into the allegations.
Israeli Ambassador to Egypt Shalom Cohen and his deputy, who were present when Bishara submitted the letter, confirmed that he had resigned.
Bishara, a fiery nationalist Arab lawmaker, left the country earlier this month. Bishara told a group of Egyptian intellectuals late Saturday that he might not return to Israel, to avoid a trial.

Good riddance to this “Arab nationalist.” Who needs him in Israel anyway?

"The allegations against Bishara prove that Trojan horses serving a fifth column have infiltrated the Israeli Knesset," Orlev said. "The authorities must capture Bishara anywhere he tries to take cover, and bring him to trial in Israel."

Whbee added that he “cannot find a single Arab-list MK who’ll express any empathy for Israelis currently under fire.” Balad MK Azmi Bishara proves Whbee’s contention. In an interview with the BBC he refused to utter any criticism of Hizbullah, stressing that he regards himself “as one of the victimized people of the region,” and that the slain Nazareth children are to be “added to the list of victims of Israeli war crimes.”

Israeli-Arab Knesset Member Azmi Bishara was almost as outspoken: “If the Palestinians want a state, attacks like this help them,” he told an Egyptian television station yesterday. Bishara refused to condemn the attack, saying afterwards, “I have always been against attacks against civilians - but never in the territories [Judea and Samaria]... [These attacks] show that the desire for Palestinian resistance has not broken.”
