Minuteman co-founder criticizes both sides in leadership struggle (Simcox)

Anti-illegal immigration activist Chris Simcox split from Jim Gilchrist last year, and favors neither side in Gilchrist's current lawsuit.

Jim Gilchrist goes back to court Wednesday, this time hoping to convince Judge Randell Wilkinson not to place his Minuteman Project Inc. into an independent receivership while control of the group is litigated.

This tussle with former allies isn't the first of Gilchrist's internal conflicts in the battle against illegal immigration. While Gilchrist was running a border-watch operation with Minuteman co-founder Chris Simcox in April 2005, the two had a falling out. Simcox went on to form his own group.

Last month, Gilchrist told me that Simcox gave him a call of support of his current power struggle. I found this surprising. While Simcox is damning of those trying to wrangle control from Gilchrist, he also remains critical of Gilchrist himself.

"Gilchrist and his followers and even the cabal trying to remove him are charlatans," he wrote me in an email, in which he promoted his Minuteman Civil Defense Corps as the "real Minutemen."

Simcox's correspondence has been fascinating. Particularly his reckoning of the April 2005 border operation. According to his account, Gilchrist's faction was staying at a nearby Bible college.

"The Bible college soon turned into an armed compound with snipers on the roof and a cult of Gilchrist followers who were violating the SOP (standard operating procedure) at every turn," Simcox wrote. "Jim was ... just lapping up the media, that's all he cared about. He lost control, and control was taken away from him. We had no choice because the future of the movement was hanging in the balance.".......... "

Minuteman Announces Issuance of Preliminary Injunction
And Dismissal of Action

The Orange County Superior Court has issued a preliminary injunction that orders former Minuteman Project, Inc. advisory board members Marvin Stewart, Deborah Courtney-Peterson and Barbara Coe to stop diverting or spending Minuteman funds. With this much need relief in hand, Minuteman. announces that it has dismissed its action without prejudice to refile the lawsuit if further misconduct occurs.

Minuteman Founder and President Jim Gilchrist stated: “I am delighted that rather than spending the next 2 years in litigation and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars of contributions for Attorney fees and legal costs I can focus full time on the critical issue of illegal immigration. It is far more important to fight the amnesty bill than the satisfaction of obtaining an uncollectible judgment.”

The Minuteman Project’s action creates an important victory for the movement. Full attention and valuable resources of the Minuteman Project under the leadership of Jim Gilchrist can be focused into saving America and defeating the Bush administration’s amnesty bill. Jim Gilchrist is being booked across America for high profile speaking engagements where he will address the unthinkable fact that 3 members law enforcement has been wrongly imprisoned for enforcing immigration law.

“It is a critical time for America, our beloved nation is in peril and we could lose our sovereignty overnight,” Jim Gilchrist stated.

We shall ignore the name calling, empty rhetoric and false claims of others and concentrate on the mission of being the voice for the American people. We are hopeful that the defendants take this opportunity to move on with their lives.

The mission of the Minuteman Project will continue on better than ever.

Jim Gilchrist,
President and Founder of the Minuteman Project
