Mark Studler has nothing against people expressing their religious beliefs, even on their license plates. But the Allen County man says he also believes those folks should be treated like Hoosiers who use their vehicle tags to promote education or the environment and are charged an extra fee to do so.

It is an official national motto, nothing is be promoted. If you want you can get the standard plate for the same price. Dumb suit, I hope a judge has the sense to throw it out.
If it is a special plate and costs more to produce, then I see no problem with a fee. I had to pay extra for my Vet plates.
The extra fee is for all the charity work the government does these days.
Like the conservation plates that some amount of the fee goes to some charity that calims to promote conservation.
If the State of Indiana gave money from the In God We Trust plates to a church, the ACLU would go apoplectic.
The stink seems to be about the application of fees as opposed to the message itself. Usually the ACLU would be involved when they believed that the State was endorsing religion, even in this case a stretch. But fees for plates other than standard probably should be the same. IMO the whole “vanity plate” thing is stupid.
I have always thought that is so wrong. I pay extra for my vanity plate, and I would gladly pay an additional fee so that Veterans can have Vet plates for free. I have always thought it disgusting that Veterans should have to pay any extra fee for a Vet plate.
Arizona has a humane society plate, but I don’t have it because it would not have allowed me enough room for my Vanity phrase. I’m not telling what it is though. ::blush::
My husband also pays extra for his plate that says Patzrul. He gets a Patriots-related plate from every state we live in.
As far as the “In God We Trust” thing, I think that because it is National motto, it should not be extra, although I do, very grudgingly, see his point.
On a side note I had to build a platform for him to stand on because the podium was very tall, he always looks taller on TV.
A group of pro-life people here in TN went through all the requirements to get a Choose Life plate. The ACLU sued because there wasnât a pro-abortion plate, I think it got thrown out.

I agree. It seems to me that this should be able to be settled out of court. Just add the 15 bucks and get on with life. This is insane to clog up the courts over 15 dollars. Vanity plates are just more expensive period.
“I would gladly pay an additional fee so that Veterans can have Vet plates for free.”
Count me in for that idea, as well. I know California offers a Purple Heart plate, but I don’t know if you have to pay extra for it. I have a commemorative 9/11 plate, with “ENGN 54” on it to honor a FDNY firehouse, and I have to pay for that (which I am glad to do!).
Any of fellow Left Coasters know if Vet plates are offered by California and if Vets have to pay for them? If they do, maybe we can do something about changing the rules so that they can get them for free.
According to Indiana’s websits, the administrative fee of $15 is waived for “Support Our Troops,” Pearl Harbor Survivor and Ex-Prisoner of War plates;
I want my plates to read FUACLU.
sorry I did a search and received no hits
In Texas, vets get vet plates free of charge.
I hope the ACLU doesn’t expect ot be paid in cash, they’re going to get a rude surprise. Perhaps they will start filing these assinine lawsuits for free. /sarc
Some people simply have too much time on their hands.
When we still lived in Massachusetts, they charged for them. That is the state I was referring to. But then again, Mass charges for everything. We never looked into it here in AZ.
Really? I'll have to check that out.
Bet they would not say a darn thing if it read In ACLU we trust?
Glad to know that all real injustices have been solved so that the ACLU can focus on license plates.
I will have my new plates say:
getACLU
though my motto has always been:
ACLU-less
I have heard conflicting reports that this plate does not cost anything extra up to $.50 more...
If it does cost more I say pay it and still give it to the general fund...No one is forced to buy this plate and it is about the nicest looking plate that IN has had in a long time.
I got the “support our troops” plate. I would have paid an extra $15 for it because I wanted it.
No one is forced to buy this plate and it is about the nicest looking plate that IN has had in a long time.
Bingo! Our plates are so ugly, in my opinion, that is why so many people are getting the colorful “In God We Trust Plates”. I have seen them on thousands of vehicles..very popular here in Grant County.
If the 'fee' covers the cost to produce it; what's the beef?
I do not believe there is any LAW that REQUIRES a certain amount above the costs to be charged.
Wink - wink
Nudge - nudge.
ACLU strikes again
Its time that the ACLU gets sued as an official hate group using current hate crime laws against them. These guys do nto oppress Jews or Muslims. Its time to hit them with a few thousand lawsuits!
Go for it.
Meanwhile, vanity plates should either cost everyone extra or no one.
I disagree as some ideas have been proven by long and bitter experience to be harmful to a nation and other ideas helpful.
A sensible people and government would promote proven good ideas and discourage bad ones.
The idea that all ideas or beliefs are equally valid and deserving is what has weakened these United States and the people.
“A sensible people and government would promote proven good ideas and discourage bad ones.”
The sharp distinction between liberals and conservatives highlights a disagreement over what are good or bad ideas. I’d leave it up to the individual to decide and pay the price, if need be, for his decision. That’s why I don’t buy vanity plates. I don’t want to spend the money.
Those that do, may.
I view anything that gives more money to government as a bad idea.
More money=more power
I need all my power, errr money.
