Somewhere on this wonderful website, Box o' Truth is a study in what 12 gauge slugs do to things. Most police officers will engage a threat at less than 50 yards. A slug gun is probably the most deadly small arm available for that range. If you've ever had a .45-70, you'll really enjoy what that thing did to the boxes.

Thanks very much for the most excellent link....it's been added to my bookmark collection and I will look through it....it looks quite interesting and helpful.  I agree on the 12 gauge slugs....I have those alternating with 00 buck in one of my home defense shotguns so that I can just shoot twice and stop most anything  :-)  In the case of police, however, I think that it's a question whether they would be allowed to load their cruiser shotgun with slugs.  Many departments strictly regulate the ammo that's allowed for on-duty use.  And of course range is an issue with shotguns, whereas an AR or M16 would have fewer problems with that at the range we are talking about with this story.

A sniper should of course use a rifle, but most cops will never operate as snipers.

And most cops haven't been trained as a sniper.  I think that it was the Discovery channel that had a really nice program on the US Army sniper school.....it may be available on DVD.  It gives a bit of a sense of the rigorous training they go through....many top-notch people fail because it takes a very specific sort of person to do that work effectively and pass the sniper school..  One thing that a more typically- trained patrolman could do in the sort of scenario at the mall would be to use a select-fire M16 to provide cover fire and keep the perp's head down while the sniper team moved into position, if the patrolman couldn't take out the perp immediately.

After I looked at the various studies on the site, I unloaded my AR and filled up the 590.

The shotgun was indeed a wonderful invention, with the added advantage of (usually) not leaving a living criminal who will sue you after the smoke has cleared.  I try to practice with mine as much as I can.

Check out the site, you'll find it very interesting.

I will indeed, and thank you kindly   :-)

What do you suppose they’d do if you prevented an armed robbery, or worse, in their store? Ask you to holster your weapon and stop bothering their “customers.”
