A section of highway lies burned and crumbled in Emeryville, Calif. MSNBC video ÂTanker explodes April 30: One of the West's most-traveled sections of freeway isn't there anymore. NBC's Stephanie Stanton reports.
OAKLAND, Calif. - The threat of a nightmarish morning commute led many Bay Area residents to use public transportation Monday, one day after a fiery tanker crash caused a heavily trafficked section of freeway to collapse.

My heart goes out to fellow Freepers living with this disaster.
Trial run? Just asking ...
Isn’t this in Nancy’s district?
Here is a clickalbe link that shows a picture.
Really does remind me of the 89 quake highway collapse.
Moved shortly after due to the commute back then in 1989.
Did I mess up?
So only a bridge collapsed? Damn, I was hoping for the big one that would flush that section of the left coast into the ocean.
What’s a “nitemare”? Is it anything like a “nightmare”? Or can they just not spell?
opps forgot the link.

They had two different headlines but I think the mispell was my fault.
I left the nightmare commute just last summer. I feel for everybody affected by this, but sure am glad I got out of Cali.
I’m glad I moved from the Albany-El Cerrito zone to the West Bay a few years ago. I’d be hating life right now if I hadn’t.
Meta lesson .... the rotten core of Kaleefornia’s ancient freeways is now falling apart. Yes, the flames were intense, but the structure was a piece of crap. Not as bad as the rinky dink Central Skyway in SF but pretty bad.
You can always tell exactly where the statelines with NV and AZ are - the roads are immediately smoother ... LOL
Birmingham, AL replaced one in 37 days. Similiar problem with a truck and fuel.

No, I think Barbara Lee’s ..... even more apropos!
Every thinking person knows that fire cannot melt steel!
I hope Mayor Newsome does not look to the fed govt for help, especially after telling the world in no uncertain terms he would keep San Fran a sanctuary city. Hey Gavin, here’s a thought, put some of those illegals in your city on the reconstruction project...
Atlanta had a tanker fire under an overpass of I-285 a few years ago, it left gaping holes in the concrete and ruined steel beams. It took a month or two IIRC.
Let’s see—San Francisco sends San Fran Nan to Congress. Mayor is as corrupt as the day is long. Declares itself a ‘sanctuary’ city for lawbreakers. Promotes rampant homosexuality and same sex marriages.
“Nitemare for Commuters”, eh?
Sounds more like ‘karma’ to me...
I wonder how easy it would be to predict further turmoil in SF’s future?
"Night" is spelled with the letters "g" and "h" in it. No "e".
Changing titles is a noe-noe. ;-)
No ... I mean ... is this another AQ probing mission testing our weaknesses?
What’s the driver’s NAME???? The Media is so damn AWFUL, I have not seen what his name is!!
There was a local CBS reporter at the Oakland station looking for people whose commute was impacted. She couldn't find anyone.
I don't think it's going to be as bad as everyone's predicting.
</moonbat rant mode>
That won’t stop Mark Cuban from funding a movie proclaiming that the government blew up the bridge, once the Mavs lose Game 5.
Exactly!
Is Charlie Sheen still going to narrate that numb movie? Will this make Rosie O’ stfu?
Curious minds want to know....
Is Cuban really as childish as he is portrayed by some in the media? IMO, if the Warriors had an owner with his passion it wouldn’t have taken them 13 years to get back to the playoffs.
We watched that doc he made the other night and having attended many Marine Science seminars we were LOL at his misconstrued attempt at science.
Then the segment of his losing the election was like most of the doc out of context to the subject matter or shall I say pseudo subject matter.
The cartoon he showed of the little girl replying to the ice cube in a drink theory “oh like daddy puts ice in his drink in the morning and the gets mean.”
The whole thing was bizarre.
He kept talking about all his friends who have taught him about (pseudo) Global Warming.
I think he is confused about who we call friends. Unless he considers consultants, acquaintances ect all his personal friends.
Pure bologna. Thank goodness he did lose the election.
This oughta help those who bought homes 90 minutes away by commute rethink their decision.
add Oregon to that.
Oh! how silly of me...I forgot to add the Leftist mantra
It was the JOOOOOOOOOS!
“Whats the drivers NAME?”
The driver, James Mosqueda, 51, of Woodland, was headed from a refinery in Benicia to a gas station near the Oakland Airport when the accident occurred, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A preliminary investigation indicated he may have been speeding on the curving road, Cross said. Mosqueda was being treated in a hospital for burns Sunday; the hospital would not transfer media calls to his room.
....
this was not difficult info to find ... do you like everything spoon fed? :-)
James Mosqueda ... 51 yrs old ... now in the regional burn unit.
Wow that seems impossible with govt contracted road work.
It would probably take that long for Cali gov to just get bids.
Believe it or not I was an ace spelling champ in my California public school dayz.
Must be short circuiting in that gray matter area. : )
"Are there any Chinese Jews?"
No, orange jews, grapefruit jews, no chinese jews!!"
Thanks for that “real” live report.
We have been going through some trials and worked with staff at the Medical Center along with the public offering assistance when folks noticed us having a hard time on our stops getting back home.
I really was awe inspired by all the wonderful humans in the world.
Being homebound and watching the news I was under the impression that the most of humanity was evil perpertrators.
My ditzy-ness amazes myself at times.
CALTRANS recently replaced 12 bridges in a 20-mile span of I-40 between Barstow and Needles, in two-stage project (6 bridges at a time.)
The first stage took just over 100 days. The second stage is about to be re-opened, after approximately 90 days...
They can do fast work for emergencies. The controlling factor will be CALTRANS’s ability to get steel mills to produce 16 or more 80-foot girders in short notice. The reason to use steel, rather than the more quickly produced concrete has to do with seismic concerns.
Many FReepers have the same problem, like the ones wishing California would fall into the ocean or the ones that think this collapse is "karma" when it doesn't affect San Francisco's Leftist political hierarchy at all but causes a nightmare for the large number of Republicans who commute to the city from the East Bay. ;)
Cuban is why I’m eating this Golden State / Dallas series up!
put some of those illegals in your city on the reconstruction project...
No way! Those will be high paying jobs that belong to US citizens.
Isnt this in Nancys district?
— But since she says there isn’t a war on terror, it’s of no consequence.
I still say they’re practicing.
Then there’s that little matter of a couple of big fires going off in Washington, D.C.
Coincidence?
Maybe I’m too old and remember the cold war from a long time ago. We suspected everything and everybody. Maybe we all ought to be a little more scared.
Growing up in the bay area we had US Steel in Antioch and they were closing down 20yrs ago and I assume are no longer there.
Which makes me wonder do we have any steel mills operating in the US or do we import that now too?
We have plenty of mills...just not that many that can produce the amounts of steel with the complicated welds needed for this project in such short notice. We (I’m a CALTRANS consultant,) think we may have found a source...more to come.
Whats the drivers NAME???? The Media is so damn AWFUL, I have not seen what his name is!!
I thought I read James Mosqueda
(honestly)
Kiewit and Yeager-Skanska are the only companies that might be able to pull this work off...
Yes.
In fact, I hope that because of the humiliation of losing in the first round, Cuban sells the team. Then I can root for the Mavs again.
That must be one ugly long commute.
It was 20yrs ago.
Use to take us 20 min to drive from John Muir in Walnut Creek to Childrens Hosp in Oakland.
Prior to our leaving for the rural Oregon Coast the commute took 40-50 min. depending on time of day.
I am told by newbies that have come up here that folks commute from Sacratomato now.
Even from the Fresno area to San Fran.
As for Brentwood it use to be a rural farming area and now it is track homes all encroaching on what farms are left.
The area we have lived in here on the Oregon coast is 1 to 2 size acre lots and 98% of us are from Cali. Lotsa retired teachers.
Are you nuts!
They would end up building a bridge right over to the otherside of the border.
That would be one heck of a comute.
I wrote the piece at Independent Sources that sono linked. I kind of thought that attributing a black bag op to the Office of the First Lady and saying that “Attempts to think about confirming this story were unsuccessful” would give away the fact that it was poking fun at the truthers. Maybe I am writing for the wrong side :-)
