Knut Steadily Getting Less Cute

It's a tragic fact of life. Celebrity polar bear cub Knut, now almost five months old, is gradually mutating from a fluffy porridge-lapping cub into a heavy bruiser with a penchant for meat off the bone. But the visitors are still flocking to see him.

Knut is looking more like an adult every day. Knut's days of extreme cuteness are numbered now that he has acquired a markedly longer snout and weighs a chubby 17 kilograms (37 pounds), twice as much as when he first appeared before an adoring public five weeks ago.

"His teeth are sharper and he's stronger, he still gets porridge but we now feed him beef on the bone occasionally," the zoo's bear expert Heiner Klös told SPIEGEL ONLINE. "He's calmed down a bit, he doesn't potter around as much as he used to and he's happy to sit on his own more often. But he still wanders back to his keeper to tank up on security."

He’s still a cutie pie but pretty soon he’ll be a cutie who can rip your face off.

I guess it's almost time to let the presidents of Greenpeace and PETA into the cage for a visit with the cuddly bear...

I’m Gilbert, the filbert,
The knut with the K.
The pride of Piccadilly,
The blasé roué.

Oh Hades, the ladies
Who leave their wooden huts
For Gilbert, the filbert,
The Colonel of the Knuts.

Does that mean Knut’s going to go become a really hot looking polar bear and have his own tv show?

There was a National Geographic (I think) special about raising a pair of polar bear cubs, and once they hit about 60 pounds each, they really couldn't be handled any more. It bummed the bears out, but they eventually got over it. But it was sad to watch the keepers and the bears looking longingly at each other through bars or glass... Of course, you sort of wondered what the polar bears "saw."

That was Klondike and Snow. Wonderful documentary. The mother abandoned them and they were tiny, tiny, tiny when they were found. And you’re right, they seemed to be well adjusted polar bears swimming in their own houses at the end of the show.

He can play the lead in Al Gore’s next blockbuster, “Knut: From Cute to Global Warming Lawsuits”.

Funny, I was just thinking the opposite: the years have been very good to her. If you consider that in the first picture she was carefully posed, made up, lit, and subsequently airbrushed, and that all the hundreds of other shots that were taken in that session were thrown out; while in the second it was an unexpected moment in time, with the worst light any woman could face--I think she comes out VERY well.

It would be a good idea for the zoo keeper to keep in mind that is the way Trentwell felt about Grizzles. He saw a FRiend in the Grizzles, the Grizzles saw lunch.
