WASHINGTON, April 30, 2007 The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have learned that byproducts from pet food manufactured with contaminated wheat gluten imported from China have been used in chicken feed on some farms in the state of Indiana. This information came to light as part of the continuing investigation into imported rice protein concentrate and wheat gluten that have been found to contain melamine and melamine-related compounds.

Please FDA Let the Consumer Decide.
In today’s FDA press conference they talked about the 2.5 - 3 million chicken that were fed feed from China that was tainted with melamime (and possibly other substances) back in February.
The chickens were processed (killed) and distributed (sold to you).
But they will not tell us the names of the companies that sold these chickens.
Chicago Tribune: You say its too late to do a recall, but why not name the companies and let the consumers decide?

Anyone have any reoccurrence of what they thought was stomach flu lately?
Thanks for the ping.

What I want to know is - why are we selling our corn and wheat for others to consume around the globe while being forced to buy China’s tainted products because the government refuses to allow products labeled with country of origin? I would be willing to pay more to know all the ingredients are home grown, but as it stands now I’m not allowed to know that.
As would I!
The FDA and USDA should have been watching and testing imports on a constant and continual basis. THAT IS THEIR JOB and responsibility. We now have contaminated ingredients in our food supply from a Communist country that could care less about our safety. Yet our administration has done nothing to protect us.
Shameful and despicable. Will it take the DemocRATS to hold accountabilities and deal with these issues on behalf of the people?
I’m surprised companies aren’t doing checks on their own additives. Something doesn’t add up here...
Sorry for the double post.
I just got a FReep mail for a prayer request.............
Here is part of it.
” please put the word out for healing for Carol, she is in a bad way with her kidneys and digestive system and has me frightened for her life. She cannot keep any food down”
DIDN’T THE FDA HAVE A WARNING OUT AT THE START OF THE PET RECALL FOR THE CDC TO REPORT ANY KIDNEY FAILURE IN HUMANS?
I have it somewhere in my vast files.
Waiting to see what these circumstances are with Carol.
Prayers for her.
Well, yes they should, is the answser, but oversight and testing of all imports, esp. food products is a primary responsibility of US regulators.
My dog has the right idea. He just goes out and kills a squirrel and eats it every day. I haven’t had to worry too much about the dog-food disaster in the past week! Now I’m going to have to start learning to make Brunswick Stew with the critters he catches because it looks like our food supply is getting contaminated too.
More ‘bad food’ news! Cluck, cluck!
JUST WONDERFUL!! After the pet food scare, I’ve been cooking chicken & veggies for my pets!!! When will the FDA be taken to task about this?????????????????????

I think at this point the government is on full CYA and we’re probably only hearing the tenth of it.
Absolutely right. It makes me sick. There's no telling how much of this crap, and lots of other mystery ingredients, we've consumed over the past years. I'd like to know the countries of origin of my food ingredients, so I can make a rational decision. I don't trust the FDA to test the incoming materials completely. They simply aren't staffed for it, and as soon as they learn how to detect one contaminant, the criminals in China and elsewhere will come up with new adulterants.
We used to kid about eating "rubber chicken" at banquets. Who knew we'd end up eating plastic chicken.
I see only one solution at this point and that is for the companies to start or to have whatever checked by an independent laboratory.
I guess I am up all night worrying about my freezer full of chicken. LOL
Actually napped yesterday so not sleeping.
I can not see why not do a recall...it has been consumed? Am I the only person who shops sales and freezes ahead?
Would this include California chickens too?
These US inspectors are worth about as much as the UN inspectors!:)
“let the consumers decide”
I’d like the US consumer to tell the chinese to go to hell and boycott ANY food product they import. People MUST be shown that the FDA cannot or is not willing to protect the consumer.
Including Congressmen and Senators. The term Congressional oversight is an oxymoron.
Hey, Pelosi, talked to anyone from Wilbur-Ellis lately?
Please remove me from your ping list.
It is their job. But, the FDA has vitamins to control and check first.
And certainly, the USDA has better things to do than protect Americans
from 'mad cow disease', first. [/s]
The problem is: Why is there no accountability?
Good question. And, I'd broaden the topic (for the question) to multiple other issues as well. There is seemingly little accountability anywhere in government these days -- but when it comes to public safety, there is no excuse.
Prayers Up~~~Bump~~~
China moves to detain a man linked with the recall. From the New York Times:
SHANGHAI, May 3 The general manager of one of the companies accused of selling contaminated wheat gluten to pet food suppliers in the United States has been detained by the Chinese authorities, according to police officials here and a person who was briefed on the investigation.
Mao Lijun, head of the Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Company, is being held in coastal Jiangsu Province, about 320 miles northwest of Shanghai, though a police spokesman in Pei County declined to say on what charges.
In a telephone interview a few weeks ago, Mr. Mao denied any knowledge of how melamine, an industrial chemical, had adulterated pet food supplies sold under his company label earlier this year. He also insisted that his company had never exported any wheat gluten and that his products were only sold in the domestic market.
Hi Sweetie,,,Just One Guy Did All That ??,,,NOT !
Get the “WaterBoard”,,,
We all know that other “Boot” is gunna drop when the CDC
finally has to tell the Truth ! Too many eyes on them...
Please, Americans, please. Get some history and get some understanding of Chinese governmental philosophy.
The Chinese firmly believe that they were politically and economically raped by the USA, Britain and France over a 200 year period of time. This is taught in the Universities here.
The Chinese believe firmly that to cheat the West in any matter and to come out on top equals patriotism. This is also taught in universities here. To cheat to win over the west is just getting back what was “stolen” from them in the past. This is what they believe and what they teach at university level.
The Chinese not only don’t care if they bankrupt us, they would delight in it. That would be victory.
Economic equalization = stealing from us (or destroying us)to spread the wealth around the world = Chinese governmental philosophy from Marxism and the Communist Internationalle, which they have never abandoned. THE REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH IS STILL IN THEIR DEEPLY-HELD PRINCIPLES. Redistribution of wealth on a world-wide scale is part of the world communist scheme (and United Nations scheme!). Nobody can produce one document to indicate that Beijing has forsaken this goal!
All of this means that Beijing is really not interested in protectcting copyrights or patents, even though they are now advertising “Intellectual Property Rights Day” on billboards here in Shanghai. This is for the consumption of foreigners, to make the West believe that Beijing is interested in protecting Western-owned copyrights and patents.
And Beijing is not overly concerned at foodstuffs or agrochemical firms sneaking tainted products into the USA through textile companies. They are only interested in not being caught doing so. If a Chinese firm beats us in this to the economic benefit of China, that will be okay with Beijing, the Chinese Communist Party and the Peoples Liberation Army.
Very scary, thank you for posting.
I will be glad when the truth gets out, all the truth, but to we know it never will.
Do they have a recall on for the feed? What brand is the feed?
