Liberal Democrats are attempting to muzzle conservative talk radio: they are assaulting free speech. Like the communists in the former Soviet Union, America’s liberals seek to crush dissent by consolidating control over the media—especially talk radio, which has emerged as the dominant medium for conservative opinion.
Allies close to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are promoting legislation, which if passed, will take off the air prominent conservative radio hosts such as Michael Savage, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly—along with thousands of smaller conservative broadcasters. The bill, entitled the "Media Ownership Reform Act," is sponsored by Rep. Maurice Hinchey, a leftist Democrat from New York. The legislation aims to revive the so-called “Fairness Doctrine” of the 1940’s: “all views” are to be given equal time on radio. In particular, the Federal Communications Commission would have the power to oversee and change radio and television content. The goal is to tilt the ideological balance of power away from the right on the nation’s air waves.
The real force behind the effort to censor conservative talk radio is the progressive–philanthropist, George Soros. The radical leftist billionaire has made no secret of his hatred for conservatives. He says President Bush has transformed America into a militaristic, “fascist” empire. Moreover, Soros champions many of liberalism’s chic causes: abortion on demand, legalization of drugs, homosexual marriage, euthanasia, unlimited Third World immigration, open borders, and one-world government anchored in the United Nations. He advocates all the issues that are anathema to popular radio talk-show hosts like Savage, Limbaugh and Hannity. Hence, he wants these commentators to be exiled to the political wilderness...

Of course I wouldn’t want this thing to actually pass, but I sure hope it comes to the floor for debate. I think I would PAY to watch the committee hearings and debate on this. Shine the light of day on the anti-free speech nazis!
The drivig force behind this bill, Rep.Dennis Kucinich, Will more than likely drop his support for the bill once he loses the nomination.

We should revere our Founding Fathers for their wisdom and foresight. They knew free speech was an escape valve that kept some people from picking up a rifle.

If this passes, either the President will veto it, or will end up at the Supreme Court. In some ways, I almost wish they would pass a law like this...and then watch it get shot down!

I’ve heard other idiots say similar things. This, of course, implies that the speaker believes either 1-there SHOULD be speech regulation, or 2-there already is speech regulation and Limbaugh, etc. are “above the law”. I pray that people like that don’t vote.
Maybe, just maybe, we can get him indicted on such crimes and have him deported to face trial?
I’m a moderate libertarian who finds people with views considerably similar to mine on “conservative” talk radio, as well as people with views that make me cringe. But what really made me cringe was when I heard about this bill on one of the shows I listen to. I’m so adamant about free speech that I wouldn’t even vote to silence Hitler...of course I wouldn’t vote him into office either.
Problem is, this is the only article around about this bill. I googled the bill by name, and I found a two year old dead bill that seemed fairly tame. (but still abusable) Is this bill being revived in a different form, and if so, where can I find a link to it, or an article about it with more neutral language? I want pass this around to drum up opposition against this bill, but it’s a bit hard to do when the only source is slated against social issues that libertarians (and liberals) are for. I actually know some “real” liberals, the one who would never stand for censorship, but you have to present something like this in the right flavor for your audience to get them on your side, you know?

This push for the so-called Fairness Doctrine has nothing to do with any notion of “fairness” and everything to do with making up for the failures of Air America. Apparently Kucinich, Hinchey, Dingell et al. believe that passing some legislation will magically create a significant market for liberal talk radio. Unfortunately in the end it will only serve to hurt local broadcaster.
He’s technically a “(child) victim” ~ and he’s apparantly never lied about it.
Watch satilite radio, podcasting, and the internet THRIVE if the libs get their way.
