Cataclysmic volcanic eruptions in Greenland and the British Isles brought on a destructive bout of global warming 55 million years ago, an international study revealed Thursday.
The eruptions also separated Greenland from Europe by giving birth to the North Atlantic Ocean, said the study in the April 26 issue of Science.
The findings are important 55 million years after the fact, because the volcanic activity released large amounts of methane and carbon dioxide and warmer temperatures followed -- just as scientists warn is happening today.
And the release of these so-called greenhouse gases had the effect scientists today fear, of raising surface water temperatures five degrees C (nine degrees F) in the tropics and more than six degrees (11 degrees F) in the Arctic, said the study of marine fossils and geology of the period.
"There has been evidence in the marine record of this period of global warming and evidence in the geological record of the eruptions at roughly the same time but until now there has been no direct link between the two," said Robert Duncan, professor at Oregon State University and an author of the study.
Deep-water ocean life was snuffed out by large amounts of plankton near the surface, blocking light and oxygen filtering down to the level of fish, which became extinct, they said.
Since the Industrial Revolution, scientists say, humans have been releasing ever greater amounts of carbon and methane into the atmosphere, exaggerating the greenhouse effect, which allows light to enter Earth's atmosphere but does not allow the heat to escape, much as the glass in a greenhouse.
Scientists look at rising Earth temperatures, melting polar ice and changing weather patterns as evidence of global climate change.

C'mon, what did mankind do back then to bring it on.
It couldn't have been natural, could it?
This article is about the Eocene Thermal Maximum, a well-known event in the earth’s history. I don’t have the figures right here in front of me, but I would bet that the amount and composition of gases pouring out of a volcanic eruption during a major rifting episode is enormous compared to the amount of carbon dioxide created by the Industrial Revolution. First, the amount of gases was probably huge. That’s a guess, but I think I’m correct. Second, volcanic gases not only have carbon dioxide, but the gases also have lots of water vapor, sulfur compounds, and other gases that could influence global climate.
Of course, most readers of the media don’t make those fine distinctions, and the reporters involved won’t present them.
“The eruptions also separated Greenland from Europe by giving birth to the North Atlantic Ocean”
That’s one heck of an eruption.
Wait till the Yellowstone cauldera goes and we label that region, "The American Sea".
An almost Clintonesque eruption one might conclude.
The study reported finding evidence that early man was divided into two groups in response to the change, and one group, referred to as "Gore-men" by the scientists, superstitiously believed they themselves had caused the change. The Gore-men refused to use fire to warm themselves or cook their food, and also tried to prevent the other group from doing so, say the scientists.
I have no way to verify the time but obviously something big happened on this earth longer than 6,000 years ago. The Bible does not give the date but does describe some of the activity and tell us why.
An almost Clintonesque eruption one might conclude. Or a warm Gorebasm.
We must offer up sacrifices to the volcano gods to keep this from happening again. I nominate Al Gore.
It was excess use of toilet paper!
For the cows, no doubt. ;^)
No, no, no - this is incorrect. The Gore-men used 10 times the fire of the average man, but forced others to do without so that their usage was offset.
According to your charts, the incidence of atmospheric CO2 exploded starting 20,000 BC. What human activity back then could explain this? Domesticated mammoth farts? Sports Utility rafts? The increase in cooking fires among the well-to-do Pithecanthropines? Enquiring minds want to know!
Did you happen to catch Glenn Beck show last night on Global Warming? I am sure it will come on again,be sure to check it out.
It was created.
