Clinton, Byrd plan bill to end Iraq war

WASHINGTON, May 3 (UPI) -- Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., said in the Senate Thursday she and Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., will introduce legislation to end authority for the war in Iraq. The bill will propose Oct. 11, 2007, as the expiration date for the congressional resolution that authorized President George W. Bush to use force in Iraq. That resolution was approved Oct. 11, 2002.

"The American people have called for change, the facts on the ground demand change, the Congress has passed legislation to require change," said Clinton, a leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008. "If the president will not bring himself to accept reality, it is time for Congress to bring reality to him."

The House Wednesday voted to sustain Bush's veto of legislation to fund the Iraq war. The bill contained provisions on withdrawing U.S. troops that the White House said were tantamount to setting a date for defeat.

The White House Thursday rejected Clinton's proposal to sunset the 2002 Iraq resolution. Spokeswoman Dana Perino called it "another way to put a surrender date on the calendar."

YOUR ACTION REQUESTED BY SOME TROOPS IN IRAQ: Please spread the word about an appeal for redress that people in the military can sign to show support for the mission. They are having problems getting the word out:

If you haven't seen this yet: A campaign by active-duty troops asking Congress to drop plans for a withdrawal from Iraq. Lt. Jason Nichols, a 33-year-old naval projects officer who has been in Baghdad since mid-January, said the goal is to keep lawmakers focused on letting the military finish its mission in Iraq, and not prematurely declare failure

Too many kooks and left wing loons left the roost, Mrs Bill Clinton has to do something to try and get them back on their perch. With Democrats it's not about anything but winning elections -- Never forget that.

I liked the way the R’s were 100% on the GWOT.

I have these old history books and in them it mentioned the sailing of the “Great White Fleet” that Roosevelt sent around the world back in the early 1900’s You know, show the big stick and all that .... didn’t Congress at that time cut off funding for the fleet just to show the president that they had control or am I missing something here ????

Won’t get outta committee if it has a chance of passing into law. If they know that it won’t pass into law, they’ll be sending it to the House.

The Dems are starting to realize that, no matter what, we’ll be in Iraq past 2008, and probably past 2012. Most of the Dems realize that the wind they are sowing today will be the whirlwind that they’ll inherit should they win the next election.

Once the plans for the cruise became public, not everyone was impressed. Some critics felt that this show of force would encourage a Japanese attack on the fleet. Others were worried that the Atlantic naval defenses would be weakened by taking away so many ships. Also, it was reasoned, since the Panama Canal was unfinished, the ships would have to pass through the Straits of Magellan, an area that posed considerable danger because of tricky currents and great storms.

Senator Eugene Hale from Maine, chairman of the Naval Appropriations Committee, threatened to withhold money for the cruise. But this didn’t bother Roosevelt, who replied in his typically brusque and forthright fashion that he already had the money and dared Congress to “try and get it back.”

Nobody took Roosevelt up on his challenge and the Great White Fleet got underway that December morning, with the coal-burning ships’ stacks spewing billowing clouds of black smoke into the gray sky. Aboard the flagship Connecticut, Rear Adm. Evans looked out with pride upon the majestic fleet under his command. He had stated earlier that his ships “were ready at the drop of a hat for a feast, a frolic or a fight”.

Robert Byrd can’t control his own bowels, much less whether the war ends. Someone go change his Depends so he’ll get over his delusions of grandeur.

TR had enough money to send them halfway around the world. He then suggested to Congress that they should appropriate money to get them back home. Congress complied.

Sen. Levin said that funding wouldn’t be cut off. Levin + Lieberman + GOP (minus Hagel and the other guy) equals no-go on this legislation. If the Dems can’t cut off funding, then they have no way to push a time line.

I agree. Did it not look like at least 5 of the Pub candidates were pretty serious as Prez-communicating? They were far more able to deal with serious questions even though Chris Matthews asked loaded questions. Rudy G did not have enough time to deal with the tough items fired at him. Either did Tom Tan. or Duncan Hunter. Hunter looked solid. Romney looked better than any of the Dems. For that matter, even Rudy, John, Duncan, Gilmore, did too. For Clinton now with the KKK guy to try to end the war again , shades of Harry Reid and Nan, will really diffentiate the Pubs from the Dems on the seriousness of the global war against Islamofascism.

I think the Dems are going to rue the day. The press is going to be trumpeting this surrender bill from the rooftops. If the tribes and the US are cleaning Al-Q's clock like we're being told, the Dems might just be caught trying to surrender in the middle of a clear and certain victory.

In politics there are many things that you can be and still survive. Stupid and cowardly isn't one of them, at least to this magnitude.

I think this is a SERIOUS blunder for the left. THEY might be pacifistic cowards, but the rest of the country isn't.

Said Mrs. Clinton...The American people have called for change, the facts on the ground demand change, the Congress has passed legislation to require change...

Proving that left-wingers are much better at undermining political foes than they are at actually thinking of consequences of actions.

As Newt said on Fox this evening, (I paraphrase) if the American people are treated to in depth analyses of just what will happen if we are defeated in Iraq, they will support victory as the only alternative.

Thanks for the updated information on that .... seems it’s almost the same thing that President Bush is going through although the Fleet wasn’t at war then .... so it’s Congress who has control on the purse strings?????

Barak Obama and John Edwards, along with Dennis Kucinich, have proposed a bill that would cut funding to the war, thus one-upping Hillary Clinton (to get the looney left vote, of course)

“Lets make this perfectly clear.” If there was ever an overused cliche, this is the one. The Left wing, starting with Monsewer(I know, it is tacky) Kerry, and now standard usage with the left-out wing of the Soros army, insist on using those five words to obfuscate, not make clear.

We should just laugh loudly each time it is repeated. Would that be LOLL? in internet talk? Or maybe LLOL.
