Through this Operation Recruiter Appreciation I met a woman whose grandson is fighting cancer. He loves postcards, so I sent him one from D.C. She wrote me back saying he loved it and put it in his scrapbook. Unfortunately, of the family/ friends she asked, only one other person wrote him one. So I'm now respectfully requesting that you consider sending him one and mention Gathering of Eagles.
Zach is 12, and he just had an operation to get a tumor from behind his ear. The good news is the doctor thought it went very well. The bad news is he has another surgery on May 18th.
Thanks much for all you do!

Bite your tongue! (or keyboard, although that might hurt more) ANYTHING that will get a kid to read is good. Harry Potter isn’t that bad. I’ve read all of them, myself. Several times, in fact. Gearing up for the next one, now. Newberry and Caldecot award books are no better written than Potter is. (no worse, either) Everyone has different tastes, so it’s ok if you and yours don’t like Harry Potter, but not everyone will share your tastes, either. Get them started reading, even if it’s just comic books, and you can lead them to bigger and better stuff later. My youngest went from just barely reading to reading at 8th grade level in the 4th grade with a liberal dose of Harry Potter, and everything else I could find that might possibly interest her. She has her own definite tastes in reading, and they don’t match those of anyone else in the house, but that’s ok because she READS! I like military Science Fiction, like David Drake, David Weber, and Jerry Pournelle. I’m the only one in the house who reads it, too. Encourage them to read whatever they are interested in, and salt in a few books on other subjects, as well, and help them expand their horizons. You’ll be doing them good, and our country.
Reading opens up so much for boys that age. Finally everything is not hand-held games...or ones on the Monitor.
I am anxious for another summer with him. I think I may even get to go to Boy Scout Camp for a week. ( I was a Girl Scout Camp Director years ago!)
Sorry to be so slow to respond...somehow this thread got lost!
I sent about 5 note cards in the first envelope.
The package arrived before Mother’s day and I guess was well received. I got a nice note from the Grandmother today. She said he was receiving cards and enjoying them. He is a very advanced reader so a word search book was better than an age level book. I hope he shared with his sisters too. It was OK to send a stuffed monkey to a boy. I was worried about that.
The presents for his Mother were a good thing since they do not get out much to get things.
I did include a letter explaining that my “girls” had loved to read under the covers at night. The cookie NANA did bake and send those too...
I may write once more in a few weeks, but that may be enough...
you have gone above and beyond, my dear! i am sure it was a great blessing!! thank you!
You are Welcome.
Anything for children...call on me anytime.
For everyone...thank you!! Below is the message from Zach's gramma!
Dear Coop,
Thanks for writing and asking about Zach. His [second] surgery [on May 18th] went better than we expected. The lump that was found and thought to be cancer too was [only] a cist. They took care of it and he is doing so much better.
I don't know if I told you about the cancer that they operated on for his ear [the first surgery]. But they were able to remove all of it. They did have to remove his ear to get down where the roots of the cancer were. But they were able to put it back on and all he has is the scar on the back of his ear and the one inside his ear. It is looking so good.
We have been truly blessed and thank God every day that he is doing so well. Thank you so much for all the postcards and well wishes. Please thank everyone that sent one for us. And please let them know he is doing so well. He is just a little sore but otherwise doing well. He loves all the postcards that he has been getting...
Patricia (Zach's grandmother)
God is so good!!Thank you for your prayers, the cards and various other things you have sent. We have more cards to send over the next couple of weeks to add to Zach's collection. Thank you, again!
