“ewww! perhaps find a caldecott or newberry winner...good literature rather than harry potter?! “

Bite your tongue! (or keyboard, although that might hurt more) ANYTHING that will get a kid to read is good. Harry Potter isn’t that bad. I’ve read all of them, myself. Several times, in fact. Gearing up for the next one, now. Newberry and Caldecot award books are no better written than Potter is. (no worse, either) Everyone has different tastes, so it’s ok if you and yours don’t like Harry Potter, but not everyone will share your tastes, either. Get them started reading, even if it’s just comic books, and you can lead them to bigger and better stuff later. My youngest went from just barely reading to reading at 8th grade level in the 4th grade with a liberal dose of Harry Potter, and everything else I could find that might possibly interest her. She has her own definite tastes in reading, and they don’t match those of anyone else in the house, but that’s ok because she READS! I like military Science Fiction, like David Drake, David Weber, and Jerry Pournelle. I’m the only one in the house who reads it, too. Encourage them to read whatever they are interested in, and salt in a few books on other subjects, as well, and help them expand their horizons. You’ll be doing them good, and our country.

Yes, the books make the difference...we made robes and even have the pictures of the characters framed and hung in the bedroom. People ask “ are those your cousins”?

Reading opens up so much for boys that age. Finally everything is not hand-held games...or ones on the Monitor.

I am anxious for another summer with him. I think I may even get to go to Boy Scout Camp for a week. ( I was a Girl Scout Camp Director years ago!)
