Posted on 05/06/2007 11:18:57 AM PDT by Islander7
PARIS (AP) - French voters chose Nicolas Sarkozy as their new president on Sunday, giving the conservative a comfortable margin for victory and a mandate for change, result projections from four polling agencies showed. His Socialist opponent conceded minutes after polls closed.
The agencies said the conservative won 53 percent of the vote amid massive turnout, dashing Socialist Segolene Royal's hopes of being elected France's first woman president. The projections were based on vote counts from representative samples of hundreds of polling stations across the country.
Fox News reporting that Ms. Royal has waved the white surrender flag, which I gather she’s pretty good at.
French fries redux! Viva Le France!
She’s already conceded.
Waiting for Sarko’s victory speech in about 10 minutes.
Coverage on CSPAN 1 right now. What great news.
C’est magnifique! I’m cracking open a bottle of champagne in Sarkozy’s honor.
I wonder if Royals’ riots have started yet. /sarc
Royal warned of violence if she didn’t win (where do we keep hearing that from?)
Seems the Socialist parties, as they did in Mexico, always see violence unless they win. The new campaign slogan of the ‘tolerant’ Socialists? Elect me or else!
Forgive me for asking (and not paying attention to the news), but what is so special about Sarkozy’s victory? Is he going to bring the out-of-control Muzzie piopulation under control?
It is a great day! The turnout was also amazing.
That’s one of the themes that he campaigned on.
We’ll see if he can succeed. At least he’ll try.
“A pro-US French politician...”
‘Together, everything is possible’.
Nice to hear, for a change.
You and me both - my FAV is Bordeaux, and I've wanted some soooooo badly, but wouldn't support French ANYthing. MAYBE it's time ;-)
SCORE ONE FOR THE GOOD GUYS, AND CELEBRATE!!!
Nice to hear the guy being conciliatory to the losers.
Sarkozy said, in July 2005 [during the riots], that the car torching muslims are vermin that must be wiped away!
Hillary take notice
I already know the theme of my next DUFU edition.
Well let’s get the looting started shall we.
Wow! Discusses the US publicly.
Controlled immigration policy.
France is with “women around the world who are beaten, who have to wear the burqa”! Big applause!
Freep-mail me to get on or off my pro-life and Catholic Ping List:
Please ping me to all note-worthy Pro-Life or Catholic threads, or other threads of interest.
Sarkozy, a Catholic, has caused controversy because of his views on the relationship between religion and state. In 2004, he published a book called La République, les religions, l'espérance (The Republic, Religions, and Hope), in which he argued that the young should not be brought up solely on secular or republican values. He also advocated reducing the separation of church and state, including the government subsidy of mosques in order to encourage Islamic integration into French society. He flatly opposes financing of religious institutions with funds from outside France. There has also been controversy over his attitude to the Church of Scientology which has itself been the subject of significant controversy in France after meeting with Tom Cruise.
That’s exactly my thought today. And I can add French cheese to the Danish cheese I’m serving my guests at a dinner I’m hosting!
This is from “news” outlet called Reuters reacting (should I say mourning) to the French election results: “opinion polls regularly suggested voters preferred Royal”.
Hey guys at Reuters and “news” outlets elsewhere: faking polls is not always enough, you know...
Me too! I haven’t bought a French wine since the Iraq war started. Maybe I’ll head over to my favorite local wine store and buy a nice bordeaux to celebrate!!
Mon dieu! Aujourd’hui on boit le vin francais!! Vive la France! Vive Les Etats Unis! Vive le retour d’une vraie amitie entre les deux!
“French fries redux! Viva Le France!”
That’s just a pure lie. Royal NEVER lead in ANY poll between the first and second rounds.
The riots will start in the night. In July 2005, tens of thousands of cars were torched in a few weeks, but only during the nights.
Well, not much, but at least he beat the Hitlery clone.
(Loses sumptin' in the translation)
Hot Damn! No more cheese eating surrender monkeys?
Sarkozy sweeps to French presidential victory
Just what will result from this Victory
is still to be determined. On the surface,
it sounds good. OTOH, this could have an
Hmm, he’d have my vote if I was French.
Yes this is great. I’d vote for him too. I was on business in Canada last week and was dealing with a French firm. They said he was going to win going away.
It takes a Hungarian to lead the French.
Long past night time there now, so looks like she was just blowing smoke which is a good thing
“Vive le retour dune vraie amitie entre les deux!”
Oui,oui, C’est bon. Et avec champagne - A votre sante!
