GIULIANI URGES CLINTON TO RELEASE ISRAELI SPY (1999, Jonathan Pollard)
Times Union | Sep 29, 1999 | Stewart M. Powell

Posted on 05/06/2007 11:57:38 AM PDT by calcowgirl

WASHINGTON -- New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani urged President Clinton Tuesday to free convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard, a move that could boost Jewish support for the Republican's prospective Senate campaign -- and complicate a possible run in 2000 by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

...

Regarding Pollard, Giuliani said the Israeli deserves presidential clemency because the life sentence for espionage given him in 1987 goes "way beyond" sentences given in the past to American citizens convicted of spying for a U.S. ally.

Pollard, a former civilian U.S. Navy intelligence analyst, has already served a longer prison term than enemy spies who are routinely traded by their governments, according to Giuliani, a former federal prosecutor and associate attorney general in the Justice Department.

"It seems to me that there was an appropriate basis on which the President could exercise his discretion and cut that particular sentence," Giuliani said, adding that Pollard has "served much more than anyone else convicted of the same thing."

Giuliani stressed that he was restating a position that he had taken on the Pollard case "a couple of years ago" rather than announcing a new position.

The Clinton administration continues to review clemency for Pollard following repeated requests by the Israeli government. ...

...

Giuliani deflected questions about whether he would endorse Texas Gov. George W. Bush as the Republican presidential nominee. The Associated Press quoted a top New York GOP official as saying the mayor could make such an announcement on Thursday.

That’s a good summary of events!

We need to work with our allies, but when an ally is put in front of the US of A, to the detriment of our National Security and risking the lives of Americans, the harshest punishment is in order. Let him rot in jail.

The other one who disappeared first was worse . The name caller.

I was wondering if they were the same person.
Throw out rhetoric and insults and then disappear.

Not this s**t again!

Pollard should be dropped in a hole and left to rot (or be shot).

Technically idiots are citizens too.

Exactly which ally are comparing Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt and Egypt to? England? Canada?

I question your intelligence. I question your spite. I question your hatreds. Who needs that kind of "loyal citizen", anyway?

Quoting the grand master klagon, Condor51. I notice he left off the top loyalty of all. Loyalty to our Creator.

What would Condor51 think of George Bush hosting the Queen of England? Dual loyalties. After all, Mr. Bush said we were the "children" of England.

Or of FDR supporting Britain during the period before December 7th, 1941 -- gee, that must have been tough for a staunch "pure loyalty" America Firster.

Idiots then, idiots now.

Your contributions to FR are immeasurable, and most gratifying. We laud your
infinite wisdom in the defense of American values and your unquestioned love of
country. You exhibit the steadfast spirit of America.....one of FR's key missions.

*** Yes. I have a problem with it. I will quote Condor51 from the linked thread: ****
"I don't care if they are Israelis, Mexicans or Martians, but this dual nationality crap is UN AMERICAN. You cannot serve two masters. You are either an American Citizen loyal ONLY to the USA or you AIN'T - period, end, stop."

calcowgirl,
You can use that quote any time you want. That is my unequivocal position and should be of any American.

Furthermore, if some people can't agree with that, then they should get the hell OUT of the USA and move to the country of their choice pdq.

Or in the case of Martians ..... the space ship in on launch pad #3.

Questioning people’s loyalty is a murky thing.

Questioning people’s loyalty is antithetical to everything America stands for. As is denying any American a vote, wherever they live. So is squashing free speech.

Inevitably, discussions such as these bring out, or are started by, Firster types. It's a convenient platform from which to pontificate about "loyalty" (wink wink). Nevermind that the original "Firsters" were wrong, that FDR didn't trust them to be part of the WWII effort (see Charles Lindbergh) and that they were utterly discredited and shamed.

It's certainly an issue for some anti-Rudys.

He's run by the endless war hopefuls from some middle east stinkhome populated by heretics.

He supported a pardon for Pollard, and he's hired the despicable neocon Ted Olson, Pollard's lawyer, as you know prompting comments about Barbara's after death reaction.

It's a shame all the viable Republican candidates are pro Israel and anti terror. Worse yet Republicans, like Dems, operate overseas, though I admit Israel is the only country mentioned in that regars.

What's needed is a R candidate who's anti Israel, pull the troops out now, with the stature of a Jimmy Carter.

Maybe one will arise, more likely third party.

You have no business questioning anyone when you are unable to answer the simplest of questions, instead responding with such hatefilled rhetoric.

Quoting the grand master klagon, Condor51. I notice he left off the top loyalty of all. Loyalty to our Creator.

I believe we were talking about citizenship and voting, not religion. "Grand master"... another cowardly slight, I assume? Really now, it's hard for any American loving citizen to disagree with Condor's statement:

"I don't care if they are Israelis, Mexicans or Martians, but this dual nationality crap is UN AMERICAN. You cannot serve two masters. You are either an American Citizen loyal ONLY to the USA or you AIN'T - period, end, stop."

What would Condor51 think of George Bush ...? Or of FDR supporting Britain ...?

Perhaps you should ping them if you are really interested in a response.
