They were beyond redemption and a curse on the land. So, He ordered the Israelites to eradicate them completely. They didn't, and consequently their troubles became endless and ultimately fatal.

Some mistakes seem to repeat themselves. I suppose that the Israeli government thought they could 'work' with Fatah as long as their stooge was still nominal head of the government of the PA. Maybe when the Hamas ragheads take over fully, Israel will just bomb Gaza into nothingness.

I have a feeling that it will take many thousands of Israeli dead for that sort of resolve to emerge, however.

You can make a case that GWB is an inarticulate Churchill in power in 1936. He sees the threat clearly but is unable to motivate his people to follow him in facing it.

Churchill, despite his great rhetorical power, throughout the 30s was unable to convince his people of the threat until it had been putsched right down their throats. By the time he came to power, there was no question of the danger, only of whether Britain could survive it.
