President Bush Welcomes Queen Elizabeth II to the White House

WASHINGTON — President Bush, a leader known for his informality, welcomed Queen Elizabeth II to the White House Monday with an uncharacteristic display of high pomp.

"We did sort of have to convince him a little bit" to opt for the white-tie dinner, first Lady Laura Bush said Monday of her and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's efforts to talk Bush into hosting the most formal dinner the White House can offer.

The British monarch and her husband, Prince Philip, are being greeted later Monday morning with a 21-gun salute and a parade by the U.S. Army's Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps attended by 7,000 guests on the White House's South Lawn.

An exclusive few will return in white tie and tails for the state dinner among 13 damask-clothed tables set with gold-trimmed ivory china and gilded silver candelabras.

"We're very excited to host Her Majesty," Mrs. Bush said Monday morning on ABC's "Good Morning America."

"We had the opportunity to be here the last time she was here for a state dinner (hosted by the first President Bush in 1991) ... and we're so thrilled to have the chance to host her and to show her the strong affection the American people have for the British," she said.

I just hope she remembers that we kicked their butts.
---
I imagine she is more likely to think of the five wars (including the present one) we have fought together as allies and kicked someone else's butt.

And hey, I may have forgotten a couple other wars in the count. There have been so many, it's hard to keep rack.

What’s the deal with these top hats she’s wearing? I think they have little coolers in them, and that’s where she keeps her Slim Jims and Mountain Dew...

And the Continental Marines wore green.

As did the British Riflemen (skirmishers and snipers).

>>You hate the Brits for 1776

I don't hate the Brits but I do know who funded the Russell Trust.

It's nice that the Monarchs come to visit.   It provides an opportunity to remind folks why this document was written and implemented.

I wonder if they'll have a Tea Party while she's here?

As I said in another post, we’ve fought together in five wars (including the present one) kicking other peoples’ butts.

She has far too much class to mention what happened to the White House when her great-great-great-great-grandfather’s troops took it away from James Madison.

So I submit that everyone's on their best behavior.

I’m surprised there hasn’t been a pic of Frank Drebin and the Queen from “The Naked Gun”

The Russell Trust, the precursor to Skull and Bones. You do realize that President Bush, as is his father, are members of Skull and Bones?

We haven’t fought the British since 1814. However US and British soldiers have fought and died together five times since. Their blood lies mingled together in the soil of Europe (twice!), Asia, North Africa, Korea, and the Middle East.

I would suggest you remember that...

‘For some reason, British Monarchs don’t like being reminded about 1776. Why is that?’

Is it the same reason that Americans don’t like being reminded that if England hadn’t settled America and then spent 150 years protecting the American settlers from the French and Spanish, you wouldn’t have had the chance to join forces with the French and rebel? ;-)

‘Well the Black Watch did burn the place to the ground in 1812.’

That’s the Scots for you - never leave them alone with wine and matches in a wooden building. . . . .

So long as everyone remembers that this was intended to be a Republic and Not an Empire, we'll get along fine.

The American West was settled by Americans - Not by a bunch of woossies with their pinkies in the air.

"The World Turned Upside Down" is a beautiful, lively march tune.

It was written during the English Civil War, lamenting that the Puritans had banned all the old feasts, doles, celebrations, and harvest-homes.

The World Turned Upside Down. Maddy Prior (of Steeleye Span). Of course, another set of words to the same tune goes, "When the King Shall Have His Own Again." So it cuts both ways!
