Bush Would Veto Democrats' New Iraq Bill (Funding Only Until July)
Associated Press ^ | May 9, 2007

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush would veto a bill drafted by House Democratic leaders that would fund the Iraq war only into the summer months, his spokesman said Wednesday.

The Democrats' proposal would pay for the war through July, then give Congress the option of cutting off money after that if conditions do not improve. Bush requested more than $90 billion to fund the war through September.

"There are restrictions on funding and there are also some of the spending items that were mentioned in the first veto message that are still in the bill," White House press secretary Tony Snow said on Air Force One traveling with Bush.

Asked directly if Bush would veto the House bill in its current form, Snow said, "Yes."

Bush vetoed an earlier bill because it set deadlines for U.S. troop withdrawals from Iraq.

The new proposal is aimed at appeasing Democratic lawmakers who want to end the war immediately and are urging leaders not to back down after Bush's veto. But lacking a firm endorsement by the Senate, the challenge by House Democrats seemed more for political show than a preview of another veto showdown with Bush.

Snow talked with reporters on Air Force One as Bush flew to Kansas to see the devastation from last week's tornado.

Definition of Leftism: doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result.

Oh, wait, that’s insanity. Eh, same difference...

You beat me to it about the insanity bit. Interestingly, the one thing that they can do, they won’t do — not fund the war at all!

Agreed, but my rhetorical question of the moment is why has Bush all of the sudden grown a pair with veto threats?

I mean, the Iraq funding bill is obvious, but the hate (i.e. thought) crimes legislation? Gee, I thought the GOP's sole perogative was to get BDS Dhimmocrats to like them...

Congress is now dominated by Democrats. The Pres is in a situation he was not in before, so his behavior might be expected to adjust.

Occasionally - very occasionally - the A. P. gets it right.

While I disagree with those loonies, at least they have the balls to say cut it now and accept the responsibility for doing so. But the left's leadership won't do it. They're afraid of the aftermath being their fault.

The President needs to stay the course on this one til the Democrats either knock it off, or get the entire country angry with them.

The GOP House never let crap like the “hate crimes” bill see the floor.

That’s why Bush has never had the occasion to veto it.

The Out of Iraq Congressional Caucus is a caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives. It consists of House members who advocate the departure of American troops from Iraq. The caucus is comprised of 73 members of the 110th Congress, all of whom belong to the Democratic Party.

The caucus was created in June 2005 to unite members of the House in favor of returning American troops from Iraq. The group’s chair, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) said the following when announcing it’s formation:

“The Out of Iraq Congressional Working Group is a newly formed effort whose sole purpose is to be the main agitators in the movement to bring our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Our efforts will include the coordination of activities and legislation designed to achieve our goal of returning our troops home. Through floor statements, press conferences, TV and radio appearances and other actions, we will provide leadership for the American Public who has been waiting too long for our collective voices against the war.”

Actually, there’s one more thing they can do, but won’t do: quit playing politics with lives of our troops and give them the money they need.
