A Stand-Up Guy Steps Down In Britain

Transition: Tony Blair is to announce on Thursday that he will step down as British prime minister at the end of June. Here's hoping for a successor as distinguished.

Not that Blair's been perfect or that we haven't had our differences with him. The Third Way economic nonsense he advocated in the early years and his insistence that the U.S. tackle global warming were not well thought-out positions.

But in the global war on terrorism, Blair has been an ally without peer. He has understood what so many haven't been able or willing to grasp: Islamofascism is a threat to civilization and must be confronted militarily, be it in Afghanistan, Iraq or anywhere else it raises its ugly head. He knew the attack on the U.S. was an attack on "all of us" who believe our Western values are worth fighting for.

Blair, like Joe Lieberman, falls into the category of “principled liberal”, ie., we can agree to disagree on a lot of issues, but on the war he has been steadfast.

Why we didn’t:

Quangos
ASBOs
Wheelie-bin tax
Gay rights gone mad
Criminals turned lose
Illegal aliens ignored
Schools turned into snakepits
Bureaucracy
Stealth taxes
Speed cameras

Stand-up guy? He retreated so fast when he had to face opposing public opinion. Not Mr. Bush, he does it because he believes in it and he is still standing on the same principle on which the war started...Blair turned out to be a politician like the rest!
