DNC chair Dean says party needs to invite young evangelical Christians
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | May 10, 2007 | Carla Marinucci

Posted on 05/11/2007 5:16:15 PM PDT by vrwc1

Democratic National Committee chair Howard Dean - who once drew criticism by dismissing the GOP as a "white Christian party'' -- told a San Francisco audience that his party should open its arms to a new group of converts: young evangelical Christian voters. "We ought to reach out to those folks ... and not be afraid,'' Dean told an audience of about 125 at a $50-a head Democratic National Committee fundraiser Wednesday night at the Palace Hotel. ...

... "People don't want to go to church anymore ... and come out feeling bad because they happen to know somebody who's gay,'' he said. "People want to go to church because they know what they can do about poverty, about Darfur, about the environment.'' Dean specifically cited the positive impacts of Christian leaders such as Rick Warren -- author of the best-selling "The Purpose-Driven Life,'' and pastor of the Orange County-based Saddleback Church -- and of young pastor Joel Osteen, the televangelist sensation who has welcomed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to his Houston-based Lakewood Church. "Those people don't beat up on other people to make their point and raise a lot of money,'' he said. ...

... Dean said he is raising money for the party to prepare it for what he expects will be a nasty 2008 election. "We know we're going to get swift-boated right around February next year,'' he said, referring to attacks on 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry funded by private donors. But he vowed "this time, we're going to have $18.5 million in this special fund, ready to say to the nominee -- 'here you go, go fight 'em off and do whatever you have to do.' ''

My feeling is that the Democrats want to reach out to "young" evangelical Christians because they think they're easier to fool than the more mature ones.

"People don't want to go to church anymore ... and come out feeling bad because they happen to know somebody who's gay"

So people should only come out of church feeling good? Never challenged or bad about their condition? Good description of a spiritually weak/dead church.

"People want to go to church because they know what they can do about poverty, about Darfur, about the environment."

That's what church is supposed to be about according to Dean - material things. Forget the spiritual.

Why would evangelicals want to anything to do with the Democrat Party as long as the Democrats support abortion and homosexual marriage and don't support prayer in school?

Hate to say it but anyone who makes a statement like that is not a saved Christian and has bigger things to worry about than trying to hustle votes.

This is the church that AlGore is building now.

That was the Unitarian church 35 years ago - I remember organic tomato farming and Vietnamese orphans but not God. Dean hasn’t a clue why evangelicals go to church.

Were you ever under the illusion that he was a “saved Christian”? He is only looking at this from a political point, definitely not spiritual. He wants votes and converts to the Democrat party.

Howard Dean is more slick than I gave him credit for. This is essentially a divide and conquer strategy. After that works against the churches, then it’s time to destroy them.

Dude, this church exists already. They're called Unitarians. Their sermons consist of liberal politics. Don't take my word for it, check them out. They really have no religious doctrine. You can believe whatever the hell you want, and get to feel good because you belong to a "church". Even belief in God is optional. I kid you not.

The RATs have been busy trying to subvert and co-opt the term Evangelical Christian ever since they held their 2005 strategy conference and realized they were a party without God, guns or guts. They've been on the make ever since trying to talk tough without doing anything and making up phony "gun" organizations. This pitch for Evangelicals is just trying to coax Christians into apostate RAT enterprises.

Bartender—I want whatever he’s drinking. These DNC types know so little about Christianity that it’s laughable! Maybe these fools ought to spend a couple of weeks reading the Bible and touring evangelical churches before they plan on pulling the wool over anyone’s eyes.

Howard Dean, a maniac in search of more converts.

Evangelicals don't want to embrace your Chamberlainesque pacifism, your love of infanticide, and your penchant for grabbing personal property, wealth, and weaponry.

Evangelicals, by and large, love the Constitution. Democrat operatives don't.

I used to be a Democrat, Howard. I know what you're all about.

Christians say “Hate the sin, Love the sinner.”

Liberals says “Embrace the sin, blame society for the sinner.”

Let's not criticize him too harshly. At the moment we have him right where we need him ~ in charge of the Democrats.

They could share their experiences of commiting infanticide, and how to spread death and disease for fun. Isn't that what Christians do??

if you need a sarcasm tag you need to laugh more.

“People want to go to church because they know what they can do about poverty”

Statements like this are why Dean will never understand true Christians. True Christians go to church because they wish to worship Jesus Christ.

Didn’t Dean leave his church because of an argument over a bicycle path?

How weird is onto something here. These were the same people that helped give the rat power last November by staying home. From the rat's viewpoint trying to sell young evangelicals cancer door to door makes sense.

When I was in prep school (during the Vietnam Era) we got to pick which "church" we attended.

My best friend told me the hottest girls were Unitarians, so off we went to the Unitarian church.

We were greeted by wall to wall Vietnam protest posters, guitar-playing Vietnam protestors, preaching Vietnam protestors, and not-so-hot girl Vietnam protestors. :-)

I did ask one of the folks there if God was a Vietnam protestor--they gave me one of those "snake in Hillary's eyes" looks.

Ah yes, swiftboating. The act of confronting a politician with undeniable, irrefutable facts during an election.

Sounds like they are already worried about the election! And I think young evangelicals are too smart to be fooled by the likes of Screamin’ Dean and his smear machine.
