Military wives' whining wears on Dr. Laura
Contra Costa Times/Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 5/13/2007 | Matthew D. LaPlante

SALT LAKE CITY -- Radio relationship guru Laura Schlessinger, in Salt Lake City on Friday to speak to Army families at Fort Douglas, said she was tired of hearing the complaints of lonely and overwhelmed military wives whose husbands are deployed. "He could come back without arms, legs or eyeballs, and you're (whining)?" Schlessinger asked before taking the stage at the base theater to host her daily program on ethics, morals and values. "You're not dodging bullets, so I don't want to hear any whining -- that's my message to them."

Schlessinger boasted that she once talked a young woman out of marrying a soldier, noting that "warriors need warrior wives" and that she felt the woman was unprepared.

I heard that call, it was good.

What an idiotic article. I can’t believe the author makes money writing crap like this. LaPlante must think he’s quite a clever guy, when the opposite is true on a few levels.

Why is it only conservatives are labeled controversial? I didn’t find anything controversial in her statements. Nor whenever I have tuned into her radio program.

HMMMM ....I don’t listen to her , I doubt I ever have or will. Already I don’t care for her, she brags too much for me.

But Rush has the consensus of the American people (20m+ ) behind him, and therefore by consensus of the American people he is right. And anyone who disagrees is simply a Rush denier.

I doubt "Dr" Laura has the consensus of the American people behind her to the degree Rush does.

From Dr. Laura’s Website:

EDUCATION

BS, Biological Sciences, SUNY Stonybrook, Long Island, NY

MS, M Phil, Ph.D. (Physiology), Columbia University(College of Physicians and Surgeons), NY

Post-Doctoral Certification in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling, Human Relations Center, University of Southern California, Los Angeles

Licensed Marriage, Family and Child Counselor (MFCC), California, formerly in private practice for 12 years

Past member of the Biological Sciences faculty of the University of Southern California (five years) and the graduate Psychology faculty of Pepperdine University (eight years)

A) It’s not like she’s trying to be sneaky, what with it posted right there on her website.

B) Since when does a PHD in physiology not count as a doctorate? Here is information on Columbia’s graduate program in physiology (doesn’t look like a fluff degree to me): http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/physio/graduate_program.html

C) This is some of the training you must undergo after your formal schooling to become an MFT in California: http://www.bbs.ca.gov/mft_train.htm

The local high school principal has a doctorate in education, and always insists everybody call him “Doctor”. I always make air quotes when I call him that. PhD’s who insist on being called “Dr.” crack me up.

BTW, I once heard “Dr.” Phil was involved is some con-man scheme years ago. Don’t know if it’s true, but sounds highly possible.

It can also mean inhaling a drug, eg snorting a mixture of cocaine and one's father's ashes .

No need to excerpt. The article is actually very good, if you can read between the raw hate the author has for Dr. Laura.

Military wives’ whining wears on Dr. Laura
By Matthew D. LaPlante
SALT LAKE TRIBUNE/Contra Costa Times

SALT LAKE CITY — Radio relationship guru Laura Schlessinger, in Salt Lake City on Friday to speak to Army families at Fort Douglas, said she was tired of hearing the complaints of lonely and overwhelmed military wives whose husbands are deployed.
“He could come back without arms, legs or eyeballs, and you’re (whining)?” Schlessinger asked before taking the stage at the base theater to host her daily program on ethics, morals and values. “You’re not dodging bullets, so I don’t want to hear any whining — that’s my message to them.”

Schlessinger boasted that she once talked a young woman out of marrying a soldier, noting that “warriors need warrior wives” and that she felt the woman was unprepared.

“It’s very unwise to be married young when you’re going to be alone — everybody has to grow up first to know who they are,” said Schlessinger, whose own first marriage ended in divorce.

Schlessinger, whose son Deryk is in the Army, railed against Congress, saying that her son’s tour of duty overseas — she declined to say where he is stationed, noting that would put him at risk “like Prince Harry” — had been extended because of recent arguments over war funding. She said Americans who do not believe that the war in Iraq is directly related to a larger battle against terrorism “need eye drops.”

And she praised fathers who have the courage to leave their families to fight for the nation.

“When you’re in the military, that comes first,” Schlessinger said. “You don’t want to not have gone and find out your wife has to wear a burka,” referring to the outer garment worn by some Islamic women that covers the entire body.

The radio host known simply as Dr. Laura — Schlessinger’s doctorate is in physiology, but she is a former marriage, family and child counselor in California — declined to say how she felt about women who leave their families to serve at war. “I’m going to leave that alone,” she said.

Schlessinger did acknowledge having “a problem” with families in which both parents are service members, saying it was “unconscionable” to put children in a position where both parents might be deployed.

During the pre-show interview, Schlessinger advocated two years of obligatory military training for all Americans, suggesting that such a program could have limited the bloodshed at Virginia Tech last month when a gunman killed 33 people. She said she was not advocating a draft, however, saying only people who want to go to combat should actually go.

Schlessinger’s publicist said the controversial talk show host’s visit to Fort Douglas is one of several visits she has made to bases across the country, with more planned later this year.

The radio host said she hoped to help military families through their troubles faced during wartime.

“People listen to me,” Schlessinger said. “I’m trusted and respected.”

Women, including spouses and mothers, have historically never understood what their sons/husbands truly do, ie the responsabilities involved in serving during wartime. I'm sure that this is not so much the case today (women being less "sheltered"), but they still see things from a certain perspective that we should be sensitive too. Allow their husbands/sons to communicate the stakes and responsabilities involved.

In other words, with all due respect Dr. Laura, please shut your trap when "confronting" these ladies. They have enough to worry about.

Information from Columbia on studies for first year students in the physiology graduate program.
http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/physio/graduate_program.html

>>Students are required to take courses in Principles of Physiology, Advanced Biochemistry and Neural Science during their first year. Some elective courses, such as molecularbiology or cell biology, may also be taken in the first year. Students who do not intend to specialize in the area of neurobiology may take an elective instead of the complete Neural Science course if they can demonstrate competence in neurophysiology. This is usually achieved by taking the neurophysiology section of the Neural Science course.<<

Yeah, just like an advanced GED. Just a little something we could pick up over the weekend.

Maybe the message is that when the soldier phones home, the wife should refrain from complaining about how hard her life is. All that would do is give the soldier more stress to deal with that he can't do anything about.

I think this article makes a lot of sense. She is standing up for the troops and for the importance of their mission. I’m not usually a Dr. Laura fan, but I liked this.

The only thing I questioned was her recommendation that everyone should go through two years of military training, but no draft. That’s a lot of time if you aren’t going to make use of people. We have enough govt interference in our lives as it is.

I particularly liked this bit:

The radio host . . . declined to say how she felt about women who leave their families to serve at war. “I’m going to leave that alone,” she said.

When my grandfather returned home from the war, all he heard from his sisters and the ladies in his neighborhood was what a pain in the a-s rationing was, and how they missed his income, mixed, of course, with happiness that he was home.

Men are clueless about certain things (emotional needs, and other odd things that I just don't understand), while women are clueless about others (responsabilities in wartime, political philosophy, engineering, etc.). ;-)

This is a very sensitive area the Doc has inserted herself into. I'm sure the servicemen coming home will have/are having the same experience as my grandfather from the women in their life, but let them deal with it.
