Student loans for illegal immigrants?

May 14, 2007

BY WHITNEY WOODWARD Staff Reporter/wwoodward@suntimes.com

SPRINGFIELD -- Illegal immigrants with "B" averages would be eligible for state-backed student loans if a controversial Senate proposal becomes law.

Sen. Martin Sandoval (D-Chicago) has called for the state to establish a taxpayer-funded student loan fund from which Illinois residents -- regardless of their citizenship -- could borrow to pay for their academic careers.

"Whether you're a citizen or a permanent legal resident or an immigrant, you . . . should have a right to an education," Sandoval said.

Sandoval's loan program fell one vote short of passage Thursday but was kept alive through a parliamentary move.

Critics denounced the plan, saying it would offer state-backed student loans to illegal immigrants.

"This program . . . would provide loans to illegal immigrants. Not to immigrants -- to illegal immigrants," said Sen. Bradley Burzynski (R-Clare), who voted against the bill.

Illinois residents would be eligible for $5,000 a year in loans if they have a 3.0 GPA, have lived in the state for at least three years and graduated from an Illinois high school.

Must promise to seek citizenship The Senate is considering a different proposal that would allow illegal immigrants to drive legally through a new driver's certificate program; the bill has already been approved by the House.

Illegal immigrants are allowed to attend Illinois public school, because districts are not allowed to ask students for proof of citizenship.

Sandoval's bill explicitly calls for loan-seeking students who aren't U.S. citizens or permanent residents to sign an affidavit that they will apply to be a permanent U.S. resident as soon as they are "eligible to do so."

He framed his legislation as a means to give high-achieving students low-cost loans, although Sandoval could not estimate how much program enrollees would save, as compared with other loan programs.

"Shame on my colleagues who threw the immigration red herring out. That is not what this bill is about," Sandoval said.

Burzynski said he's unwilling to support measures that would provide more services to illegal immigrants.

"The state of Illinois can only provide so much," Burzynski said.

And studies show that “Affirmative Action” has been a rousing success too. Only 13% of the Blacks assisted by “Affirmative Action” in colleges were American Citizens. I do not mind assisting the poor regardless of color as long as they are citizens. How much assistance is another story as I have 7 G’kids and would rater assist them than pay tax to nonsensical, mal-administered programs.

Don’t forget the right to never be offended and the right to be safe from “hate crimes.” The Constitution is always negotiable when libs are involved. If it doesn’t suit their needs, they just say it does.

“...a taxpayer-funded student loan fund from which Illinois residents — regardless of their citizenship...”

This is a message to all leftist nuts: Just cut out the middle man. Write a check to the Mexican government for 10 billion dollars. Maybe then we can be allowed to have borders.

Listing to WLS while visiting Chicago last week end for my sons college graduatin they mentioned the state has a 50 BILLION dollar deficit.

Glad I left many years ago. Now that the entire state is a one party dictatorship the corruption and mismanagement has exploded.

My son had to register for the draft to qualify for student loans! LOL

Oh, yeah, and no deferrment of interest because of OUR income. His interest began to accrue the day they made the first payout.

Sometimes, you just have to wonder.....

Good point, all Americans have to register to qualify for student loans. Hmmm... interesting that Sandoval says, “Shame on my colleagues who threw the immigration red herring out. That is not what this bill is about,” WTF is it about then?

Sandoval, Gutierez, Martinez, Menedez - do you notice a pattern here in the authors of all this welfare legislation for ILLEGAL aliens? Sounds like the Hispanic Politician Protection Acts.

Just wait until they are all amnestied and given citizenship and dominate the vote like they now do in Los Angeles. The money and privileges will pour out to this constituency.

What is worth pondering is how will this new majority respond to the needs of the next wave of immigration after them, like the Iraqis made refugees by our cut and run policies. Will they be as welcoming to them, or will they pull up the rope after they got in the boat themselves?

Seeing how they treat their fellow Hispanics on Mexico’s southern border, I think the latter.

These illegals have more rights and receive more government benefits that an American citizen can. It's out of control, they march in the street demanding rights, this that, mean time they have more rights than us! Go Home, you are criminals! Stop having babies, i don't want to keep supporting your family!

What they forgot to mention is that Sandoval serves on an advisory council to the Mexican president:

In fact, you can see his name on this list of their advisors:

Their only right is the right to be escorted back across the border where they belong.
