Rudy Giuliani: commencement address 2007 (The Citadel)
The Citadel Web Site ^ | May 7, 2007 | Transcript

Posted on 05/14/2007 7:32:04 AM PDT by Jake The Goose

Thank you very, very much, General Rosa. And thank you very much for the degree. It wasn’t as hard as what you had to go through to get it. And I should correct you, I was Cum Laude at New York University Law School, not Magna. But it’s an honor to stand before you and a great honor to be able to say congratulations to the 438 graduating cadets from The Citadel Class of 2007. And particularly congratulations to all of the people, who really made this day possible. Your parents—who I saw you all got up and very warmly applauded—they deserve that applause because I think all of you know that you wouldn’t be here without their love, their support, and their helping you through what, I understand, is a pretty difficult education. Is that correct? Wasn’t easy, right?

I am putting this speech up because I was there and I thought it was a solid performance by Rudy Giuliani - given to a very very conservative audience.

He’s a very good speaker and has tremendous charisma. That doesn’t mean I want him as President, though. :)

Seriously, though, I wish we had a true conservative that was as good at working a crowd as Rudy is. I don’t know how good Fred Thompson is at speeches, but reading the scripts of his radio commentaries, they are extremely well-written. We’re just really, really short on serious communicators for the conservative cause.

I think you put forward a serious statement.

I like the fact that you can compliment the man - then state you’re disagreement with him as a candidate for POTUS.

Nothing wrong with that at all.

You’re right - communication skills are huge.

If you grant his ability to communicate - by default you concede that he has a message that is true.

Communicate without a message cannot exist.

What a ridiculous, pompous statement. You couldn't be more wrong. Giuliani is a lying liberal.

one can quite easily concede that someone has excellent communication skills without conceding that the message being communicated is a valid one. very few here dislike rudy giuliani, despite what the dearly departed say; most just disagree, and rather vehemently, with his stance on the issues and think he is not the best choice for president.

I don’t personally hate the guy, I have no reason to. I can admire some things about him, but his beliefs rule out me voting for him except MAYBE if there’s no other practical alternative. And even then, I’m leaning more and more toward sticking with my principles and voting third-party, fully aware of the consequences.

He’s fairly strong on the Iraq war and on the Islamist threat, and does have a good record to run on in terms of how he cleaned up NYC. But his strong law-and-order stands trample on some civil liberties (especially Second Amendment rights) and he’s a pro-abortion social liberal. I can’t hang with that, never mind his personal life.

Basically, all he’s got right now is being America’s Mayor, and how strong and effective he looked after the terrorist attacks. If 9/11 never happened, and Rudy tried to run for President, he’d be looking up at Brownback and Huckabee.

If you grant his ability to communicate - by default you concede that he has a message that is true.

That's a false statement. For example, Adolf Hitler and Josef Goebbels were two of the greatest communicators of the past century, yet their messages were almost all lies. Ronald Reagan was truly the Great Communicator, and his messages were true. The ability to get a message across doesn't indicate the truth or falsehood of the message. It just means you're really good at communicating whatever it is you're trying to spread.

(Before anybody invokes Godwin's Law on me or goes nuts here--I'm NOT comparing Rudy to a Nazi. Those were the first two examples that sprung into my head of excellent communicators who were masters of lies.)

I respect this post by you - I really do.

I like your ability to give credit - then disagree.

He is still leading in the polls by the way.

Long way to go - and a lot of political battles ahead.

The GOP will come out of just fine.

Thanks for the post.

So by saying that Hitler was a great communicator, I have to concede his message is true?

This is going to be a problem. I will not vote for Giuliani in the primaries, but if he wins the nomination nonetheless I will vote for him in the general election. To do otherwise would be to vote for Hillary (or Obama, but that's unlikely). You're not voting on principle if you're helping to put Hillary in.

What does a Noo Yawk metro know about national security? In all his time in NYC, why didn't he ever consult the likes of Kissinger or Zakaria? All his foreign policy experience consisted of whoring himself to "ethnic" constituencies (the sidecurl mafia in Brooklyn by dissing Arafat, the Oi-rish of all boroughs by hosting Gerry Adams).

May the voters of America scrutinize this greasy bastard like a Manhattan Co-Op board. I have a good feeling that they will.

I don’t think I can vote for somebody who’s pro-abortion, has a demonstrated track record of being against Second Amendment rights, has cozied up to “gay pride” organizations, and all the rest. That’s abandoning what I believe in.

This is why a Giuliani nomination would be a disaster for the Republican Party. If he is nominated, he will shear the entire right wing off of the party. If you thought serious conservatives stayed home last November? You just wait until it’s Hillary vs. Rudy in 2008. He won’t be the Republican savior...he’ll be their destroyer.

The Republican Party MUST—I repeat, MUST—nominate a conservative for 2008. It’s the only chance they’ve got to win. Every single time the GOP has ever tried to move to the middle, they’ve gotten spanked. If they stay to the right and fight for conservative, pro-American, pro-God, pro-life principles, they win nationally. It works. And if it doesn’t work, then at least they lost actually standing for something, instead of selling out what they believe in just for political power.

Got busted my junior year with a still.

120 tours. - pounding the quad.

Nice to meet you.

“If you grant his ability to communicate - by default you concede that he has a message that is true.”

Obama has a lot of charisma and is a good communicator. His message is false.

However, that said, I think a lot of freepers are shooting themselves in the foot by attempting to destroy Giuliani as a candidate. I’m not a fan, but I prefer not to kill someone’s candidacy before the winning strategy is determined.

I take your point on the communication issue - my bad - your statement is correct.

The one good thing about Rudy is his influence.

The same can be said for Newt, Mitt, or anyone.

The more we all have to face the various sides to the key issues - the more rounded our ultimate GOP nominee will be.

Thanks for the post.

I just HAD to watch him when he got in his car. And died laughing from the bushes in back of the Tool Shed, aka ROTC building, Jenkins Hall???

So when Saturday Morning Inspection was held, all I could think of was him jumping around and flailing at the air and inside the car, his hair, his pants, his hat and he was screaming like a banshee.

One month later I was still laughing as I was walking tours.

All because the SOB gave me 5 demerits for squeezing my toothpaste in the middle of the tube.

Don't support Rudy at all. Trust me, don't be scared of Hillary. She'll probably do far less damage to the nation as Rudy will.

This is about putting conservatism back into the GOP. If Rudy wins the nomination, then a 3rd party candidate will appear. Conservatives are not going to support Rudy.
