Some comments on the death of Jerry Falwell:
"Jerry has been a tower of strength on many of the moral issues which have confronted our nation." evangelist Pat Robertson.
"Dr. Falwell's shadow falls across the face of the rebirth of conservative values in our nation, in the Southern Baptist Convention, and in the entire evangelical world. Only once in a generation will a man of his stature arise. We all owe him a debt of eternal gratitude." Paige Patterson, president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
"Unfortunately, we will always remember him as a founder and leader of America's anti-gay industry, someone who exacerbated the nation's appalling response to the onslaught of the AIDS epidemic, someone who demonized and vilified us for political gain and someone who used religion to divide rather than unite our nation." Matt Foreman, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.
"I think the proper attitude at this juncture is to pass on our condolences and prayers. And we'll try to do the fixing in place in history a little later." White House spokesman Tony Snow.
"An American who built and led a movement based on strong principles and strong faith has left us. He will be greatly missed, but the legacy of his important work will continue through his many ministries where he put his faith into action." Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
"Dr. Falwell was a man of distinguished accomplishment who devoted his life to serving his faith and country. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Falwell's family at this difficult time." Republican presidential candidate and Sen. John McCain
"His life is a testament not only to the power of faith to move hearts, but to the strength of the American ethos that stresses the importance of citizenship ... He was a great leader, a person totally sustained by his faith but able to work with many people from many different backgrounds without imposing rigidity on anyone else." Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
"He was a man who set a direction. He was someone who was not afraid to speak his mind. We all have great respect for him ... he is a person who told you what he thought, and you knew where he stood." Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani.
"Over the years we became friends; sometimes we had polar opposite points of view. ... I have many fond memories of him. He leaves a great legacy of service and a great university behind. He's left his footprints in the sands of time." The Rev. Jesse Jackson.
"Jerry Falwell was a close personal friend for many years. We did not always agree on everything, but I knew him to be a man of God. His accomplishments went beyond most clergy of his generation. Some of my grandchildren have attended and currently attend Liberty University. He leaves a gigantic vacuum in the evangelical world." Evangelist Billy Graham.
"My mother always told me that no matter how much you dislike a person, when you meet them face to face you will find characteristics about them that you like. Jerry Falwell was a perfect example of that. I hated everything he stood for, but after meeting him in person, years after the trial, Jerry Falwell and I became good friends. ... I always appreciated his sincerity even though I knew what he was selling and he knew what I was selling." Hustler magazine founder Larry Flynt.
"Jerry Falwell politicized religion and failed to understand the genius of our Constitution, but there is no denying his impact on American political life. He will long be remembered as the face and voice of the religious right." The Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
“Unfortunately, we will always remember him as a founder and leader of America’s anti-gay industry, someone who exacerbated the nation’s appalling response to the onslaught of the AIDS epidemic”
When you bring the disease upon yourselves by your actions, do not expect decent society to bail your over used arse out.
I like the quote from the homo group leader. Political gain, what office did he run for? I must have missed that.
This one really gets me. So...let me ask... How do gays get aids? Is it Rev Falwell’s fault? Don’t think so. The Rev only told it the way it is.
My respect for Flynt just went up. Few on the Left are so soft-spoken about those they have political disagreements with.
Jesse actually did alright - the only ass-wipes are Barry Lynn and the gay dude.
Besides Rev. Lynn demonstrating his poor understanding of the Constitution, he also showed himself to be a low life in dishing a far greater man on his death. RIP Jerry. Christians who are courageous as you are few.
He sure made the right enemies.
Jesus is smiling, I believe.
All of Israel should mourn the passing of this good friend.
Did you not know AIDS is spread by TV evangelism?
Kos and DU must be creaming their collective pants.
Really! The man has been dead less that 24 hours, what an appalling, grandstanding, unsuitable comment.
“Of the dead speak well, or not at all.”
“When you bring the disease upon yourselves...”
Oh, come on. Everybody knows AIDS is caused by lack of funding.
Other than, I can't think of a time when I have not agreed with Dr. Falwell, I echo Rev. Graham. I, my children and my grandchildren will miss him dearly.
“Oh, come on. Everybody knows AIDS is caused by lack of funding.”
Oh I know, that’s what my girlfriends’ hairdresser Bruce said!
May he rest in peace. He was a good friend of Israel. Certainly much better than the Rev. Al Shaprton or Jesse Jerkson could ever be!
Wow...I didn't realize that Rev. Falwell led the S.F. riots against closing the bathhouses to stop the spread of AIDS.
yep, repeat the big lie about AIDS..................
Yep you would believe that AIDS is a problem only because of a lack of government programs. Not enough research, and not enough condoms are out there fighting AIDS.
Let me help ground ya back to reality... With the help of Larry's daughter... telling it like it is on her father.
Matt. 25:23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
I'm sorry, but I find that response apalling.
Some of my liberal “Friends” have expressed wishes that he burn in hell and why didn’t he take Pat Robertson with him.
I couldn’t believe both Flynt and Jesse Jackson were gracious! I’m stunned. It goes to show you sometimes there are bigger things in this life than politics. I remember seeing Charles Grodin tear up when talking about Ronald Reagan. Grodin is a big lefty, but he obviously loved Reagan.
I donned my virtual bio-hazard suit and took a look over there. Cuuld not stay long in that toxic atmosphere (only a couple of minutes) lest I become irreversibly contaminated with their poison. Truly disgusting.
***Kos and DU must be creaming their collective pants.***
You aught to check it out. Never have I found such vindictive hatred for one man as I have on their web sites.
Take a shower when you are done!
Tony Snow was responding to a stupid question by a member of the White House press corps:
Q Tony, I know you said this was breaking news — the Associated Press now is saying that Reverend Falwell has died. Can you comment a little bit about what he’s meant to the political process, the Republican Party, et cetera?
MR. SNOW: No, I think at this particular point, rather than trying to do political encomium, the first thing you do is you pray for him and you pray for his family. If, in fact, he has died, he died suddenly, this is the kind of thing that is going to be a shock to those who love him and were around him. And I think the proper attitude at this juncture is to pass on our condolences and prayers, and we’ll try to do the fixing place in history a little later.
“When you bring the disease upon yourselves by your actions, do not expect decent society to bail your over used arse out.”
I liked Tony Snows comment as well. Rev. Falwell, may you fall asleep in the peace of Christ, and may God gladden you with the light of his face.
Okay, my opinion is at ground ZERO again
Wait till the left finds out that the manufacturing of condoms adds greatly to global warming!
Dr. Falwell, I never saw you in this life (other than on TV) and have been no closer to Lynchburg than the Blue Ridge Parkway. Hopefully before I die I will visit LU. I read Strength for the Journey, which He has given me (and it's been a rugged journey, especially jobwise). I look forward to meeting you (as well as embracing Him) up there.
Statement on the Death of Rev. Jerry Falwell
This page would like to extend its deepest sympathies to the family, friends, associates and supporters of the Reverend Jerry Falwell. Although we have clearly been on opposite sides of the issues, there is no satisfaction in hearing of his passing. It was his homophobic bigotry and intolerance that we wanted to die, not Him personally. We believe that people must all come together during times of sadness such as this, especially for the sake of those who must be feeling the gravity and grief of such an unexpected loss. Christopher Lamparello
[end of statement]
Whether Mr. Lamparello is shedding crocodile tears, you and God make the call FWIW.
You aught to check it out. Never have I found such vindictive hatred for one man as I have on their web sites...
...wait until Dick Cheney dies...or Dubya...
I did too. There was something sinister to it. The undertone to me was not good.
Mr. Lamparello’s statement is a million times better than most lefties.
don't go in there..it's ugly, ugly today.
I pray that when Bill Clinton dies, we can be respectful. I just am not sure that it will happen after hearing from some on the Arafat death. So can we really ask the left to be respectful when we can’t be?
“I just am not sure that it will happen after hearing from some on the Arafat death.”
The difference is that Arafat was a murderer and a terrorist. US presidents, despite their flaws, deserve our respect in death.
