Immigration Deal Tonight?(Please call your senators tonight!)
Human Events Online ^ | 05/15/2007 | Jed Babbin

A highly-placed senate source confirmed to me this afternoon that a deal on a Senate immigration bill is expected tonight. Closed-door meetings continue, and the Dems are negotiating as the Soviets used to: as soon as the deal is made, they reopen one part that was already settled.

At issue now is the issue of "chain immigration." That's when an immigrant brings in relatives. The deal earlier was that chain immigration was limited to immediate family members. Now, the libs are reopening it to include whomever (a third cousin from down south or second cousin once removed who's spent the last six years in Afghanistan). The libs are getting all the mileage they can from the Republicans.

As they say in my old neighborhood, we have to go to the mattresses on this. Call your senators now. Each can be reached through the Capitol switchboard, 202-224-3121. Call now, call later, and keep calling.

No deal should be made without revealing it to the public. Harry Reid will keep the details from us -- and from Senate conservatives -- until the last possible minute.

I hope President Bush still knows how that veto pen works. It has been nice to see him use it.

Sounds like its time to melt down the phone lines (again). These a$$ clowns won’t be satisfied until we have 500M+ people in this country—of which, 300M will be Government clients.

Makes sense to do it during the debate when those few debating can’t be there.

“Closed-door meetings continue, and the Dems are negotiating as the Soviets used to: as soon as the deal is made, they reopen one part that was already settled.”

The Dems might not want a deal.

Rove led the press to define the “problem” as “conservatives”, the Dems followed, and they may think, wrongly I believe, that the people are on their side.

If the repubs came out for a total rehaul of immigration, getting rid of chain migration, go for targeted skills (like Canada), etc., and throw in a 100,000 visas for farm stoop labor, the public will like that.

It might work with Feinstein.

She expressed a fear that Reid will reintroduce last year’s bill.

Go to the lefty blogs — they aren’t for the Bush/Dem plans either.

There is no constituency for this except the MSM given the fresh meat of blaming “conservatives.” That was Rove’s trick from last year.

From what I’m reading there’s a lot of good provisions in their bill that can be supported. Unfortunately massive amnesty is also there and automatic citizenship isn’t being addressed. The dems control the House and they can ram it through if they want but if Pelosi sticks to her requirement of 70 GOP votes then I don’t see it going anywhere. The conservatives will never sign off on amnesty, that would be a disaster for this country.

Looks like it has been postponed.... again. Until Monday? I have a problem with the "triggers," even on the best of these "compromise" proposals:

The process couldn't begin until border security improvements and a high-tech worker identification program were completed.

A new temporary guest worker program would also have to wait until those so-called "triggers" had been activated.

First, how much of an effort will our government make to bust businesses which hire illegals? (Rhetorical question.)

Second, who is going to be the judge of whether the "trigger" provisions have been satisfied? Homeland Security, the same entity which lies to congress about border patrol agents.

I sent my Congressman an article about the Border Patrol Agent who was found dead Friday, floating in the Coachella Canal.
