New Plastic Blood Could Save Lives

Artificial blood made up of plastic molecules has been created by researchers at Sheffield University in the UK. The artificial blood is light to carry and, unlike blood plasma, does not need to be refrigerated. It also has a longer shelf life.

The new artificial blood consists of plastic molecules with an iron atom at their core; this allows it to simulate the oxygen-carrying hemoglobin in real red blood cells. Hemoglobin is the metalloprotein in red blood cells that transports oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body - like the muscles - where it releases its oxygen load.

Soon we’ll have plastic blood scandals in sports, where athletes will be accused of replacing natural blood with lighter, possibly even more efficient plastic blood.

And then Barry Bonds will play well into his 80’s.

"...plastic vomit has already been around for years."

If you find plastic blood in your plastic dog-poop, your dog needs immediate medical attention; probably best to see a plastic surgeon.

It was my belief that plasma did not have to be refridgerated, unlike whole blood. The History Channel told me this, in a story about WW2 in the S. Pacific.

Or is it that plasma just keeps for a longer period before it goes bad?

How does the body process it when done? Does the “plastic” blood just stay in circulation for the life of the person?
