Yup, that and all of our allies use 9mm... plus the move for the US to adopt 9mm was kind of payback for our insistence on NATO adopting the 7.62 instead of the .280 that everyone wanted.... then a few years later, after everyone had rearmed with that caliber, shifting over to the 5.56/.223....

A reminder:

We went to the .45 in 1911 when the .38 proved insufficient to stop a radical Islamic band of Philippine terrorists called the Moro Tribesmen.

Underkill. There is no reason a gun that size should only take 10 rounds.

And I *think* on that model, the 15 rounder protrudes from the butt of the weapon. Can anyone check that for me?

IIRC, they have. That was the old ownership, a British company.

What was the deal again? I remember a controversy but no particulars.

I like polymer weapons, but for military application, too many drawbacks. A lack of external safety and the chance to fire with an ejected magazine is a bit much for me.

Go back to the 1911 frame .45 Universal parts, easy to use and knockdown power.

Granted the polymer guns are easier to clean, but I want knockdown power, not ease of cleaning.

The problem with the weapons listed in the article above is that each of the mentioned sidearms uses **different** munitions than does the soldiers’ primary rifle.

They always have, haven't they? In the era of the .45 automatic the rifles and carbines were .30 caliber. Currently the 9mm is larger than 5.56mm M16.

No, they haven’t. They’ve ignored it, but they have yet to publically repudiate it.

Yo! Company went bankrupt after the agreement with the Clintoon regime. New owners picked up the pieces, starting with the name, the patents, and little else, and repudiated the deal. Am I the only one who remembers this? (Am I going mad? Anyone?)

But the warsaw pact pistols shot a different 9mm didn’t they
(i.e. not parabellum)? Plus 7.62x25 Tok...

Nope, they haven’t. Neither the new ownership, nor the old Brits ever publicly repudiated the HUD deal with the devil.

Please provide links or evidence that I am wrong. I would like to be proven wrong, but I haven’t seen it yet.

Darn! I was considering trading in my 38, but the 45 sounds too heavy for me. :o(

S&W never repudiated the deal - and as the company has not changed names nor legal identity, and was NOT liquidated by the courts, guess what? The law says that they’re subject to all the contracts from before bankruptcy.

Unless females can shoot it - only SOF will even look at it...

I once talked to a police department armorer who loved the M&P for that very reason. The interchangeable backstrap allows their female officers (and males with smaller hands) to comfortably handle the guns. To prove his point, he installed the smallest grip on one and handed it to a woman who was present. She was quite comfortable with it. Next, he popped the largest grip on and it fit into my big paw without any problem.

The Marine in this photo is armed with a .45 sidearm and a .45 main battle weapon, the Thompson sub-machine gun:
