Splendid summary of a sadly neglected artist.

If anyone wants to know what was really going on in England, simply read the cartoons of Hogarth, Rowlandson, Gillray, and Cruikshank.

Of course, SOME things never change (note the caption).

(That's Charles James Fox, a rather coarse character even when uncaricatured by Gillray).

Terrific find.

I just stumbled upon this extensive Gillray collection at Princeton. Browsing images will display them medium-sized, an injustice easily remedied by opening them in a new window, then changing the number following "res=" from 3 to 1. For example, The Apotheosis of Hoche, tweaked to yield The [bloody huge] Apotheosis of Hoche.
