There are Nazis in Germany and in most other nations. Nazism hasn’t been popular in Germany for a long time, though, and most Germans take offense at such generalizations.
Denazification (the outlawing of Nazi individuals and speech in the media, government, business and schools) stopped popular Nazism within a generation or two.
Antisemitism has been more common in most countries of Europe than in the USA. It’s been common in Europe since the days of the Roman Empire, at least.
mash here for a real hoot.....

THAT'S for sure.
“..these kids with an arrogant attitude..”
Give any kid a position of authority and there will be hell to pay. Authority and guns are dangerous and should never be placed in the hands of someone with a juvenile mind.
Half the non- European immigrants who came in the past 20 years refer to their country of origin as “my country”. It will always be that way from now on because of today’s globalization movement. All we have to do is to look at our politicians who want to water-down the American national identity under the guise of multiculturalism.

The Americans,
the national experience
by Daniel J BoorstinThis is the middle part of a trilogy which is recommended by Thomas Sowell, and well it might be. I was far less interested in the third volume than I was in the first or the second. But in general it is remarkable in its clarification of the American culture.
Many Thanks! I’ll definitely have a look at that.
“The author’s grasp on history is weak. Anti-semitism had been popular in Germany for at least five centuries before Luther came along.”
Indeed, and the last I checked, France, Spain, Italy, Poland, Czech Rep, Slovakia, Russia, etc. and England too, have long histories of Antisemitism, or at least anti-Judaism (i.e. not with the same eugenicist/racist element the Nazi’s had).
With the exception of England, all these countries too participated in the Holocaust (ok, Russia, under the Czars the pogroms—not to mention the indiscriminate mass holocaust of all kinds of people under Stalin).
While I don’t live in Germany, I have stayed there for some time and have German friends. I’ve never met anyone who minimizes the sins of their ancestors in the 1930s and ‘40s.
In the door of the Cathedral in Erfurt Germany (Saxony), where Luther earned his Doctorate, built a hundred years or two BEFORE he was born, is statuary of 6 women on each side of the arch. On the left side are 6 holy looking women...all looking sweet and nice, in prayer, on the right side are 6 wicked looking women, whorish and garish looking. My guide there asked my group if we knew who these were—from a bible story. None of us could recall a story in the bible with 12 women.
“Oh,” she corrected herself, “it’s really about 10 women...the 10 virgins waiting for the bridegroom in one of Jesus’ parables—5 foolish ones, who ran out of oil, and 5 wise, who were prepared.”
Then who were the extra two, we all wanted to know?
The guide replied, “Well the one on the good side, she is ‘Ecclesia’ (Greek for “the Church”) and on the bad side, well that woman was “the Synagogia.”
Clearly the guide wasn’t approving of this medieval judgment, but she was making a point.
Of course Munich and Bavaria have always been Roman Catholic...so Luther’s opinions have always had little or now weight there anyway.
If we’re afraid of Antisemitism in Europe, as we should be, there are a LOT of countries more prone to it right now (with France on the top of the list) than Germany.
Antisemitism in ALL of Europe is very old—and can’t be just blamed on the Nazis, or Luther, or something endemic specifically to German culture—no matter what non-Germans would like to think.
I agree with you.... Most of the anti-German opinion you read on these blogs is from people who've never met or talked with a German, let alone have German friends or been to Germany.
Typical opinion really seems to assume old war movies....which is about as helpful as trying to understand contemporary America by watching "Gone with the Wind."
I’ve been on a lot of German trains in the last 4 years and have never seen anything resembling this episode.
What part of Germany were you in, and how long ago was this situation?
As a German national I appreciate your balanced assessments / comments. A pearl of wisdom in a sea of ignorance. Thank you very much.
“No, it isn’t, because it’s just anti-German bullshit”
but it’s true:) you can’t just bash any statement you want labeling it “anti-German bullshit”
It’s not only antisemitism
I’ve told you before how hard time I was having in Germany, having blond hair and blue eyes was ok until someone noticed my surname ends with -cki and my accent is a little bit different, then suddenly BANG!!! an invisible wall grew between me and other person.
That was kind of painful for me since I have mixed Polish-German ancestors.
I’m not accusing anyone since most of the Germans were ok, I don’t know if it’s something every German has in genes:P
there is a saying: Was genetisch versaut ist kann mann mit Pruegel allein auch nicht mehr korrigiren ;)
Still the biggest antisemite i have ever met was american, he has been seeing Jooooooos conspiracy everywhere.
I just noticed my post is very messy, but I haven’t got time to correct it, bah.
No, it’s there.
I compete in those goofy “strongest man in the world” competitions you may see on ESPN2 late at night -— throwing logs, carrying kegs of sand/beer, and that sort of thing. Silly stuff, but I give autographs in Norway, which is funny.
Well, it’s a Norweigian and German dominated sport, so we spend a lot of time in Bavaria and the like.
Of course, being big dumb jock guys, we go drinking and sing some songs (usually something bawdy, led by Australians, but that’s another story) -— including in some Munich beer halls.
There have been some pretty ugly incidents -— skin heads play “throw the beer at the Jew” -— sort of things.
BUT, in fairness, I’m not exactly small man and have been consisently backed up by 10-20 300+lb non-Jewish guys against whom I compete and consider friends —— so the little skin head punks who think they might take on one lone Jew back off pretty quickly. ;-)
But, yes, it is there, on a reasonably consitent basis.
Sure...
I’ve been told directly to my face that Americans are ignorant of other cultures. This, in spite of the fact that our schools are obessessed with multiculturalism and we have the most culturally diverse society on the planet.
I’ve been told that Americans are dangerous, gun crazy and violent people. I was told this in London, one of the most dangerous cities in the Western Hemisphere due to a huge increase in assaults since the handgun ban there.
I’ve been told that most Americans are trailer trash. This, in spite of the fact that the average American who lives in poverty in the US has a BETTER standard of living than most middle class europeans.
I’ve been told that we have too much freedom. That statement speaks for itself.
In Morocco many people actually believe that money is literally blowing in the streets here, that money is simply handed to you and that most people don’t have to work.
I’ve been told that our capitalist system survives only on the backs of our own poor and sweat shops in 3rd world countries. Appaerently our giant middle class doen’t do anything here.
I’ve been told that our president is a stupid cowboy even though he successfully masterminded the 9/11 attacks.
I’ve been told that Americans want to take over the world.
I have been told, by people who have never been to America, that in America you have to keep your head on a swivel wherever you go because gunfire could break out at any moment.
I’ve been told that the evil Jews run our country.
I’ve een told all of this by so called sophisticated, educated, nuanced Europeans, most of whom have never been here.
I live in Germany for 28 years now and never heard about a youth organization checking the peoples tickets. Sounds absurd. You probably got something wrong.
