I distinctly remember the precise moment when I knew that I would never vote for McCain.

2000 primary season. The dust-up over the South-Carolina or Michigan voicemail campaign (perhaps by Pat Robertson in support of Bush and against McCain??) was in full force, and Mike Reagan had McCain on his radio show. It was afternoon drive time in Los Angeles. I think McCain was on some campaign bus somewhere.

Reagan asked him some reasonable but tough questions on a range of issues — i.e. not softball but not antagonistic. McCain went off the deep end, accusing Mike of being in league with those evil people who left voicemails demeaning his character. He was literally unhinged. My first thought was, “we can never let this guy have his finger on the button.”

I suspect McCain is voicing displeasure with Sen. Cornyn's statement regarding the bill which hasn't been crafted or brought to the floor yet......

WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, made the following statement today regarding the announcement by Senator Kennedy and others that an agreement has been reached on comprehensive immigration reform legislation:

“While I appreciate the hard work by my colleagues as we spent countless hours negotiating this very difficult issue, I have serious concerns with the principles outlined in today’s announcement.

“I simply cannot, and will not, support any legislation that repeats the mistakes of the 1986 amnesty.  So we have to make a basic determination:  Will this bill restore respect for our laws?  Or will it have the opposite effect, and encourage still more disregard for our immigration and border security laws,  placing us within a few years in the same untenable position we’re now in?”

“I believe today’s announcement is somewhat premature because specific legislative text has yet to be drafted on a number of key details.  Until I have the opportunity to review this text, I will withhold from making more detailed comments.  Clearly, however, there will be an opportunity to introduce amendments to this legislation, and I expect there will be a number of areas where that will be necessary.”

I’d vote for Hillary before McCain. At least the GOPers in Congress would feel obliged to block Hillary’s nutty legislation.

McCain is imploding. If he wants to sucker us into this he needed to be quiet. Stupid. How can this guy win the GWOT, if he can’t control himself when things are rough for him?

Always a gentleman, that John! Of course, he’s a war hero, so that excuses any behavior, any loss of temper. I’d sure like to have someone with his temperament in the White House. We need a president who is inclined to blow up all the time. < /S>

What if the criminal aliens, crooks, terrorists and narco-gangsters don’t want amnesty? Why should they? Wouldn’t they have to pay taxes? How can you force criminals to become citizens? Why would you? If these people really wanted to be real citizens they wouldn’t use phony ID’s.

NO AMNESTY for Employers or Employees!

The MSM, LBJ, the Left and the Rockefeller wing smeared Goldwater as a “crazy man” who was not fit to be President. It was a lie. McLame really is a crazy man who is not fit to be President.

At a bipartisan gathering in an ornate meeting room just off the Senate floor, McCain complained that Cornyn was raising petty objections to a compromise plan being worked out between Senate Republicans and Democrats and the White House. He used a curse word associated with chickens and accused Cornyn of raising the issue just to torpedo a deal.

Things got really heated when Cornyn accused McCain of being too busy campaigning for president to take part in the negotiations, which have gone on for months behind closed doors. “Wait a second here,” Cornyn said to McCain. “I’ve been sitting in here for all of these negotiations and you just parachute in here on the last day. You’re out of line.”

McCain, a former Navy pilot, then used language more accustomed to sailors (not to mention the current vice president, who made news a few years back after a verbal encounter with Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont).

“[Expletive] you! I know more about this than anyone else in the room,” shouted McCain at Cornyn. McCain helped craft a bill in 2006 that passed the Senate but couldn’t be compromised with a House bill that was much tougher on illegal immigrants.

Some FReepers didn’t believe me when I posted that Cornyn was opposed to this amnesty bill. I think this shows that he is one of the bill’s fiercest opponents in the Senate.

McCain may as well run for the Democratic nomination after his involvement in this amnesty-fest.

Unless things are even worse than I imagined, there shouldn’t be any way he could get the Pubbie nomination after crapping on the base of the party this way.

If he does, then we know all hope is lost for any sanity on our side.
