"I'm evidence that your work, that your relentless campaign to promote the sanctity of human life, bears fruit.
"And I do follow, as Kevin indicated, a long line of converts - George Herbert Walker Bush, Henry Hyde, Ronald Reagan. Each of them made meaningful contributions to this cause.
"It is instructive to see the double standard at work here. When a pro-life figure changes to pro-choice, it hardly gets a mention. But when someone becomes pro-life, the pundits go into high dudgeon.

This goes back a little over a week, but still bears reading.
Don't forget self-important, preening, ersatz pro-lifers like Eternal Vigilance.
Oh, they love to talk about how much they revere the life of the unborn. But they will not allow anyone to convert to the cause. They don't want allies, I guess. The fewer, the better. Ideally, only they and a few of their friends would be allowed to profess pro-life beliefs.
Pretty selective "reverence" if you ask me.
Many people have turned their backs on pro-abort views over the past fifteen years.

Anyone who wants can “convert” to the pro-life cause. Just don’t expect them to be made the leader of it after a 35 year public record as an abortion supporter. The rest of your personal attack doesn’t merit a response.

It's a very fine speech. The award referred to at the beginning of the speech is the 2007 Mullins Award for Outstanding Political Leadership given to Gov. Romney by Massachusetts Citizens for Life.
Romney's remarks at the end of the speech are especially important:

No one has said that radical pro-abort former Governors like Romney can’t see the light.
We’re saying that:
A) His “conversion” is too darned convenient for words, and
B) Even if he were sincere, he’s far from qualified to lead our movement, our party, or be President of the United States. Newbies don’t go straight into top leadership. It ain’t the way the world works.
How much money did Mitt Romney give to that particular pro-life organization?
Romney is the only movement Conservative out there . He is the only one willing to advance the Conservative Reagan philosophy , and he will energetically do it like no other ...
